Lyric Exercise
Song lyrics are poetry verses set to music.
Just like poetry, song lyrics express thoughts and feelings.
Your voice shows feelings via rate, pitch, and volume.
You will use during your presentation and be graded on the following:
1.Rate – how fast or slow one speaks
2.Pitch – how high or low one speaks
3. Volume – how soft or loud one speaks
4. Intensity – a way of communicating emotions; forcing more air out of the diaphragm
5.Emphasis – varying volume and intensity gives emphasis to words spoken
6.Pause – a stop before a word in speaking
Example: John who was yelling was very ##annoying.
7.Framing – a stop before and after a word in speaking
Example: John, who was yelling ##was very ## annoying
8.Inflection – change in pitch (hint: think of a question)
9.Enunciation /Articulation - how clearly and precisely you speak
Your job in this exercise is to find a song that tells a story and expresses different emotions. You will present the words of the song SPOKEN not sung.
Here is your chance to show feelings/emotions with your voice.
The lyrics must be school appropriate. If necessary, we can change SOME language used.
When picking a song you must:
-remember that poetry verse may have been written first and then set to its tune.
Or
-sometimes the tune is written first and it inspires the words or verse.
Also, when picking a song consider:
-the tune or music may be lost over the years but the words are remembered.
To make this exercise easy take time in picking a song. Don’t pick a song just because you love singing the song. Look at the words closely to understand what the author is saying.

List of Emotions
Learn to identify any emotion and its meaning.
1.Abandoned -An emotional state in which people feel discarted, undesired, left behind.
2.Afflicted -To be distress by a physical problem or mental function or even monotony.
3.Afraid- Filled with fear, apprehension or regret over an unwanted situation.
4.Aggravated - To feel annoyed or bothered.
5. Agressive -To feel or show aggression. To use forceful methods to succeed.
6.Apprehensive -Anxious or fearful about the future. Uneasy.
Astonished -To fill with sudden wonder or amazement.
7.Angry -Displeasure , hostility. An emotional state that may range in intensity from mild irritation to intense fury and rage.
8.Annoyed -To feel disturbed or troubled, evoking moderate anger. Annoy refers to mild disturbance that can be caused by an act that triggers one's patience.
9.Anxious -An abnormal and overwhelming sense of apprehension often marked by physiological signs . Sweating, tension, and increased pulse.
10.Appreciation -admiration, approval, gratitude.
11.Arrogance -The feeling that comes from believing that you are better, smarter, or more important than other people.
12.Betrayed -To feel harmed when you have trusted them.
13.Bored -Lack of interest.
14.Calm -When not feeling nervousness, anger, or other emotions.
15.Cheerful -good humor, happy.
16.Certain -Sure to come or happen; inevitable. Established beyond doubt or question; indisputable. Having confidence; assured

18.Confused -Being unable to think with clarity or act with understanding.
19.Confident -Faith or belief that one will act in a right, proper, or effective way . A state of being certain.
20.Denial - An unconscious defense mechanism characterized by refusal to acknowledge painful realities, thoughts, or feelings.
21.Defensive -Protecting oneself from emotional pain.

23.Depressed -Pessimistic sense of inadequacy , lack of activity
24.Displeased-Dissatisfied or dislike.

29.Envy -Painful or resentful emotion.
30.Fascinated -To hold an intense interest or attraction.
31.Frustrated -A deep dissatisfaction arising from unresolved problems or unfulfilled needs.
32.Guilt -Culpability especially for imagined offenses or from a sense of inadequacy
33.Grateful -The state of being grateful; thankfulness.
34.Grief -Intense sorrow especially caused by someone’s death/any kind of loss
35.Hope -To cherish a desire with anticipation. To wish for something with expectation of its fulfillment.
36.Jealous-Thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that occur when a person believes a valued relationship is being threatened by a rival.
37.Love -A strong affection for another.
38.Negative -Being pessimistic, expressing disagreement or refusal.
39.Offended -To result in displeasure.
40.Optimistic -Expecting the best in this best of all possible worlds.
41.Pride -Exaggerated positive evaluation of oneself based on a devaluation of others
