Main Points / Additional NotesQualification / Certificate II in Hairdressing
C2-TH18 / SIH20111 / 8 core
5 electives
Cohort /
- Typically 15-20 students
- Predominantly female
- Usually about half are 15-18 years
- Usually about half are from culturally diverse backgrounds
- LLN issues common
- Typically visual / kinaesthetic learners
Issues /
- Need to ensure job ready graduates as some students progress straight into employment in salons (some progress to Cert 3)
- Obvious lack of appropriate oral communication skills
- Low completion rates in communication subject
- Students often lack the underpinning skills in numeracy to successfully measure and prepare colour products
- Peer Validations confirm that Communication subject is not achieving desired outcomes
- Student evaluations support the need to change the delivery of this subject.
- Current delivery is largely text based however in the workplace, communication is almost always verbal; in particular interaction with client is personal.
VET Subjects /
- Apply Hair Colour Products SIHHCLS201A
- Communicate in the Workplace SIRXIND001A
- Cert II Hairdressing
- Cert II/III Hairdressing
- Unpacking LLN :
Using simple metric units, rounding measurements, using instruments like digital scales, doing simple calculations with the measurements like halving and doubling etc
Communication subject: giving or responding to a message, using appropriate body language eg making eye contact and appropriate posture, using active listening skills, following simple instructions. etc
Relevant FS Subjects /
- FSKNUM 09 Identify and estimate familiar quantities for work
- FSKOCM 03 Participate in simple spoken interaction at work
- ACSF Level 2
- All elements of units relevant
- Performance criteria lend themselves to holistic delivery
Proposal / Trial the following model in 2014
- Concurrent delivery of NUM 09 with Colour
- Concurrent delivery of OCM 03 with Communicate in the Workplace
- Team reaching model – one VET teacher + one LLN teacher
- One subject guide for each pair of subjects
- Holistic assessment of outcomes for each pair
- No curriculum amendment is necessary. FSTP units appear in the "subjects not used" area of the students compliance/certificate essentially bonus units
- Timeframe Semester 1 : delivery is scheduled for 1 day /week for 18 weeks
- Allocate development time for revising delivery strategies and assessment tasks, particularly forCommunicate in the Workplace
- Revise on –entry assessment to include some oral communication
- Experience tells us that students resist prep courses, additional support times etc.
- A collaborative or integrated approach is preferred; examples of strategies that might be used include
Scaffolded learning
Use of customised resources
Accommodation of different/multiple learning styles
- Need to get away from theory basis and text based delivery of Communicate in the Workplace
- Some parts of the assessment do not reflect industry practice; over emphasis on reading/writing;
Barriers to implementation? /
- Funding
Enablers to implementation? /
- Appropriate funding
- Strong collaboration/partnership between FS specialist and VET area
