“Caspian Oil and Gas 2013” –A triumphant success of Azerbaijan’s oil strategy

The opening of the largest event in the oil and gas industry of the Caspian Sea region, the 20th Anniversary International Caspian Oil and Gas Exhibition and Conference, took place 4 June, at BakuExpoCenter. Caspian Oil and Gas 2013 is deservedly considered the leading event in the region, and showcases the best economic, scientific and technological achievements of Azerbaijan. The 3rd Caspian International Power and Alternative Energy Exhibition is taking place in parallel with the anniversary Caspian Oil & Gas Exhibition, which has brought together 386 companies from 28 countries. The organizers of both exhibitions are Iteca Caspian LLC and ITE Group plc.

Playing a crucial role in the realization of mega-projects for oil, gas, transport and communications along the energy corridor, which connects the East with the West, our country is a real guarantor of strategic partnership, international integration and energy security. Today, Caspian Oil & Gas is deservedly considered as a triumph of the oil strategy founded by our National Leader Heydar Aliyev and successfully continued by H. E. President Ilham Aliyev. The organizers are confident that the exhibition, beyond its 20th anniversary, will remain a hallmark of the achievements of the oil sector in the region and a platform for establishing business relationships and new opportunities for mutual cooperation.

In his speech at the opening ceremony, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stressed the importance of the event, which over the past 20 years has acquired the status of the largest forum in the Caspian region. Over these years the exhibition has successfully reflected the achievements of our country in the field of energy products; the history of its development is associated with the oil strategy of Azerbaijan, the basis of which was laid by the Contract of the Century 20 years ago. Today Azerbaijan is known around the world as an oil-producing country and a gas power, and such mega-projects as the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli (ACG) fields, the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, and the Shah Deniz field, among others, have become symbols of global economic cooperation, and the fight for Europe's energy security . In this context, the TANAP (Trans-Anatolian Pipeline) project, which is an integral part of the Southern Gas Corridor to ensure natural gas supplies from the Caspian region to Central Europe, is especially important. President Ilham Aliyev stated that a balanced approach of all stakeholders was required in implementation of these projects. As a result, the trade shows that demonstrate achievements not only in energy but also in the non-oil sector, have become the stage for cooperation.

U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mr Richard Morningstar, read a letter from the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama. The letter, which was addressed to the President and people of Azerbaijan, conveyed the warmest wishes of the U.S. President to the 20th Caspian Oil and Gas Exhibition held in Baku, underlining the role of Azerbaijan as a leading supplier of gas to Europe.

The UK’s Special Trade Envoy to Azerbaijan, Mr Charles Hendry, delivered a message from Prime Minister David Cameron, who, on behalf of Her Majesty, expressed his best wishes to the Government of Azerbaijan, and to the organizers and participants of the anniversary exhibition.

Among the VIP guests of Caspian Oil & Gas 2013 are the Minister for Energy of Georgia Mr Kakha Kaladze, the British Prime Ministerial Special Trade Envoy to Azerbaijan Mr Charles Hendry, the State Secretary to Minister for Trade of Sweden Mr Gunnar Oom, the Energy Charter Secretary-General Mr Urban Rusnak, the Deputy Minister for Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey Mr Metin Kilchi and the Deputy Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources of Turkmenistan Mr Annageldy Mammetyazov.

During the VIP tour, which was led by President Ilham Aliyev, accompanied by First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, VIP guests familiarized themselves with the main sectors of the exhibition and visited the stands of the world's leading oil companies, including SOCAR, BP and Statoil.

The list of exhibition and conference participants includes the largest players in the market, alongside the global leaders of the oil and energy sector. The great opportunities and prospects for the development of modern oil production and processing are presented here in all their diversity. Every specialist, entrepreneur and engineer will find the answers to their questions thanks to the best innovations, methods of developing mineral resources, and product lines and services presented, and will meet colleagues and associates among the exhibitors. The exhibition showcases power transformers, a variety of cable products, wires for overhead power lines, switching and distribution equipment, modern energy-saving lamps, automated systems for technical and fiscal electricity metering, microprocessor devices, and much more. The "Meet the Buyer” event organized by BP and its partners includes about 90 companies, which will be demonstrating their achievements in the field of operational support, engineering, construction, logistics and waste management, and a variety of relevant business services.

Caspian Oil & Gas 2013 provides informational space for all its participants and is of great importance for both producers and consumers in this sector of economy. The scale and highly representative composition of the exhibition positively affect the level of development of the Azerbaijani oil and gas industry. A lot of companies visit the country to become closely acquainted with Azerbaijan and study the business opportunities in the local market. Compared to last year the exhibition space has increased by 22%, and the total number of exhibitors has grown by 25%. The unfading interest in the exhibition is highlighted by the fact that 20% of the participants are companies new to the Azerbaijani market. It is encouraging that the main achievement of the exhibition over the years of its implementation has been an annual increase in the numbers of local companies, which make up 30% of all the participants this year.

This year, the anniversary of Caspian Oil & Gas coincides with an auspicious occasion - the 90th anniversary of birth of our National Leader Heydar Aliyev, who was the mastermind behind the original exhibition. The status of the event is highlighted by the record number (20 companies) of exhibition sponsors. The General Sponsor of Caspian Oil & Gas 2013 is the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), and the Gold Sponsors are BP Azerbaijan and Statoil. Caspian Power 2013, which brings together companies representing innovative technologies and equipment for the energy industry, and scientific and technical developments in the field of energy efficiency, is also being held at Baku Expo Centre in parallel with Caspian Oil & Gas 2013. Along with government organizations such as the State Agency for Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources, both local and foreign companies operating in the Azerbaijani energy sector are presenting their products at the exhibition. Among them are STPSumgaitTechnologiesPark (Azerbaijan), GOKNUR Baki LLC (Azerbaijan), Schneider Electric (Turkey) and Wartsila (Finland). New exhibitors, which include CJSC Electrotechnical Plants Energomera (Russia) and Cink Hydro-Energy (Czech Republic), account for 20% of the total number of participants.

20 years of success!

The Caspian Oil & Gas Exhibition and Conference is celebrating its 20thanniversary this year. The largest energy event in the Caspian Region, this year’s exhibition will be held from 4 to 7 June at the BakuExpoCenter.

Over the 20 years since its launch as the first specialised exhibition of its kind in Azerbaijan, Caspian Oil & Gas has become a key industry forum. It brings together professionals and leaders of the sector from around the world to present advanced technologies for extracting and processing oil and gas, transport and logistics, and services.

This anniversary falls on a significant date – it is 90 years since the birth of Heydar Aliyev, Azerbaijan’s National Leader who was at the forefront of the event’s foundation. Supported since its launch by the Ministry of Industry and Energy of Azerbaijan and the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), the event’s importance is underlined by annual participation in its opening ceremony from the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev.

Over 40% of exhibition space at Caspian Oil & Gas is taken up by leading organisations such as SOCAR, BP, OMV, Total, Statoil, Petkim, TPAO, RWE and many others.

National groups from Germany, China and Russia are also regular participants. Newcomers include US firms and Ukraine’s national gas company.

The regular Caspian Oil & Gas Conference will take place on 5 and 6 June at the Jumeirah Bilgah Beach Hotel. Presentations from key oil and gas players will examine international cooperation in increasing extraction levels; diversifying supply; using innovation in constructing offshore platforms, drilling rigs and offshore pipelines; and new projects for extraction and transportation of oil and gas in the Caspian region. Over 500 delegates are expected at the conference.
