EVENT SITUATION

You are to assume the role of director of security for Valley Mall. At each of the monthly mall store manager meetings, the mall management asks the security division to make a short presentation about store security. This month’s topic is robbery. You are to meet with the mall’s manager (judge) to go over your presentation regarding store robbery.

Valley Mall prides itself on being proactive with regard to risk management. The mall has already taken the following steps to improve security: acquiring parking lot security vehicles and installing call boxes, placing uniformed and plain clothes security personnel throughout the mall during operating hours, locating a mall security information kiosk near the center square, providing an escort service for mall employees after closing hours, holding monthly presentations on security issues for store managers, publishing a security section in the mall management’s monthly newsletter and conducting free employee training for store employees.

Neighboring malls have recently experienced an increase in store robberies. The mall manager has asked you to design a short reminder presentation with tips on what to do if a store is robbed. Since the topic of robbery has been addressed within the past 12 months, the presentation should take no longer than 20 minutes. The mall manager (judge) wants to know what your ideas for the presentation are, what questions you feel store managers will ask, and how you will show these managers that the mall management has their interest at heart.

You will present your ideas to the mall manager (judge) in a role-play that will take place in the mall manager’s (judge’s) office. The role-play will begin with the mall manager (judge) welcoming you and asking you to preview your presentation. The role-play will conclude with the mall manager (judge) thanking you for your presentation.

JUDGE ROLE-PLAY CHARACTERIZATION

You are to assume the role of mall manager for Valley Mall. At each of the monthly mall store manager meetings, you ask the security division to make a short presentation about store security. You have asked the director of security for the mall (participant) to prepare a presentation for store managers on the subject of how to deal with a store robbery.

Valley Mall prides itself on being proactive with regard to risk management. You have already taken the following steps to improve security: acquiring parking lot security vehicles and installing call boxes, placing uniformed and plain clothes security personnel throughout the mall during operating hours, locating a mall security information kiosk near the center square, providing an escort service for mall employees after closing hours, holding monthly presentations on security issues for store managers, publishing a security section in the mall management’s monthly newsletter, and conducting free employee training for store employees.

Because neighboring malls have experienced an increase in store robberies, you have asked your director of security (participant) to design a short reminder presentation with tips on what to do if a store is robbed. Since the topic of robbery has been addressed within the past 12 months, the presentation should take no longer than 20 minutes. You want to know what the security director’s (participant’s) ideas for the presentation are, what questions he/she feels store managers will ask, and how the security director (participant) will show these managers that the mall management has their interest at heart.

The role-play will take place in your office. You will begin the role-play by asking the security director (participant) to preview the presentation for you.

During the course of the role-play, you are to ask the following questions of each participant:

1.  How can you present your ideas without alarming the store managers?

2.  Why did you select these particular points?

3.  What other steps should mall management take to avoid store robberies?

4.  What topic do you think we should address next month? Why?

Once the director of security (participant) has previewed the presentation for you and has answered your questions, you may conclude the role-play by thanking the director of security (participant) for the presentation.

You are not to make any comments after the event is over except to thank the participant.

JUDGE’S EVALUATION INSTRUCTIONS

Evaluation Form Information

The participants are to be evaluated on their ability to perform the specific competencies stated on the cover sheet of this event and restated on the Judge’s Evaluation Form. Although you may see other competencies being demonstrated by the participants, those listed in the Competencies Evaluated section are the critical ones you are measuring for this particular event.

Please note that the Judge’s Evaluation Form has a starred number in the ranking for each evaluation item. This starred number represents a minimum competency level that an employee in your industry should attain so that additional formalized training would not be required immediately.

Evaluation Form Interpretation

The evaluation levels listed below and the evaluation rating procedures should be discussed thoroughly with your event chairperson and the other judges to ensure complete and common understanding for judging consistency.

Level of Evaluation / Interpretation Level
Excellent / Participant demonstrated the competency in an extremely professional manner; greatly exceeds business standards; would rank in the top 10% of business personnel performing this competency.
Good / Participant demonstrated the competency in an acceptable and effective manner; meets at least minimal business standards; there would be no need for additional formalized training at this time; would rank in the 70-89th percentile of business personnel performing this competency.
Fair / Participant demonstrated the competency with limited effectiveness; performance generally fell below minimal business standards; additional training would be required to improve knowledge, attitude and/or skills; would rank in the 50-69th percentile of business personnel performing this competency.
Poor / Participant demonstrated the competency with little or no effectiveness; a great deal of formal training would be needed immediately; perhaps this person should seek other employment; would rank in the 0-49th percentile.
