WAKE UP AND NIGHT PATROL

PROCEDURES

Wake Up!

1)  Knock gently on the door. A loud obnoxious wake up call is inappropriate.

2)  One person must open the door to show you they are awake.

3)  15 minutes later, do a sweep to make sure everyone is awake.

4)  Do one last sweep prior to the breakfast prayer. Report any illness/injury to an adult immediately.

Night Patrol!

Inside Bethany House

1)  Tell campers when they have 5 minutes before lights out.

2)  Make sure there is one person per bed. Specifically, insure that the people who are supposed to be in that room are present. No one should be in another person’s room after lights out – especially a member of the opposite sex.

3)  Check for towels pushed against the door to block light and for covering over security peephole.

4)  Scan windows for coverings to block light.

5)  Remind campers that getting rest is important. If you are challenged, do not argue with them. That is when you bring the Camp Coordinators in to deal with the situation.

6)  Report any illness/injury or suspicious behavior to the Coordinators.

Outside Bethany House

1)  Check which rooms still have a light on. Report by walkie-talkie to the inside group.

2)  All windows should have the screen intact. Close any propped doors/windows.

3)  Check for window coverings. Note room number from window and report to the inside group.

4)  Report injury/illness or suspicious behavior.

DIOCESAN YOUTH LEADERSHIP CAMP

Reporting Abusive Situations

Three Types of Situations

1.  Situations to handle yourself: Love life issues, peer pressure, etc.

2.  Situations to take to an adult immediately: Things you think may lead to hurtful, harmful or violent behavior (such as those listed in #3) to camper or any situation that you are uncomfortable about. Keeping confidentiality does not benefit the person or the situation.

3.  Situations to report to the coordinators or Diocesan Director immediately:

·  Physical abuse

·  Emotional abuse

·  Sexual abuse

·  Eating disorders

·  Talk or threat of suicide

·  Alcoholism

·  Alcohol, drugs, weapons at camp

·  Sexual activity at camp

·  Violent outbursts

** If you are unsure, always err on the side of safety and seek an adult’s help.

Information is gained by someone telling you or you have reason to believe a concern is present. It is not your responsibility to determine if the person is being truthful.

LAW: According to the State of Michigan, camps such as DYLC must report all suspected abuses.

DIOCESE OF LANSING POLICY: According to diocesan policy, all non-ordained persons representing the diocese must follow this procedure for all suspected abuses and other dangerous situations.

1.  Immediately inform the Camp Coordinator or Diocesan Director of the situation.

2.  The Camp Coordinator will inform the Diocesan Director who will see that the situation is reported to the appropriate agencies.

Reason and Rationale: The person/s involved in any situation is more important than our fears and concerns about getting involved. As a facilitator, you are committed to the health and well-being of the youth at camp.
