8th Grade Glimpse -- March 2-6

Counselor’s Corner:
Next week, I will be visiting with the 6th grade students to discuss enrollment for next year. I will discuss the courses that they are required to take, as well as their elective courses. Students will take their enrollment forms home with them and it will need to fill out and then signed by a parent/guardian and returned back to the counseling office by March 12th.

There is a Student Council Executive Board meeting in Mrs. Ryals office on March 2nd at 7:30am. There is a Student Council meeting in the counselor’s conference room on March 3rd at 7:30am.

SCIENCE: We wrapped up theSun and its Motionssection with a test Friday(G)/Mon (2/3-B). We are moving into the Motion of the Moon section (Ch 20-Lesson 2). Students will be able to describe the motions of the moon and how they determine the phases we see from earth. This too is a short unit; we are looking at having a test over this section March 11/12. 7th and 8th Grade ChoirStudents in vocal music practice sight reading daily. This week, each class has been focusing on dotted quarter note/eighth note patterns and skips (do-mi-sol). Students have also been practicing and reviewing key signatures. In addition, students have been rehearsing a variety of pieces in preparation for the spring concert.

8th Grade RISE- Students will be discussing their topic selection and ideas for their visual/graphic component of their independent study project and begin to collect research on their topic. Students will also be finishing their reflection papers on The Ultimate Handbook: 101 Success Secrets for Gifted Kids by Christine Fonseca. These are due Monday by the end of the class period. We will also be looking a little more closely at Extempore next week. We will be doing a few AHA Challenges, vocabulary and some brain stretching exercises.

8th Grade Computer Literacy-B4- We will conclude our focus on the top row keys with a quiz on Friday. Students will continue learning about Microsoft Excel and will finish their spreadsheet project that will require them to enter data, merge cells, center, use borders, cell styles, enter and use formulas, filtering, adjust column widths and heights, and other basic Excel functions. They will begin a new Excel activity that will also require them to collect some nutritional data online. With this activity they must also reflect on the data collected and graphed in Excel with a paragraph in Microsoft Word.

Pre-Algebra: We will wrap the unit on geometric measurement next week. Students will be able to find the volume and surface area of spheres. G5 will take the test on Tuesday and B1 and B3 will take the test on Friday.The test will include circumference and area of circles, volume of pyramids, prisms, cylinders, cones, and spheres.

Algebra I: We will continue the unit on solving systems of linear equations and inequalities. next week. Students will be able to solve systems of two inequalities by graphing.

Students are learning about the organization and early governments in the United States as it started out as a new nation. We will also be learning about the early struggles and barriers they nation would have to overcome to create the right government for their needs. 8thGrade Communication Arts:- Mrs.Sellman and Mrs. Lettau:Individual classroom progress reports will be sent home on Monday and Tuesday (Blue/Gold). They are to be signed and returned. Spelling:Blue Day Classes: Will receive Unit 15 – Latin and Greek word parts #1. Packet is due on Wednesday with the test on Friday. Reading:Reading for information – Advertising/Persuasion Grammar S.W.B.A.T – Identify proper adjectives, nouns as adjectives, compound adjective in written text. 8th Grade-Exploring Agriculture-Mr. Brock: This week we will continue Unit 3: Animals in Our Society. We will conclude our discussion of the beef cattle industry and its importance to our local, state, and national economy. First semester students are encouraged to pick up their birdhouse projects by the end of this quarter. 2nd semester students will be going to shop soon and we need project storage space. 6th/7th/8th Health and Physical Education:

The students will be going over there tests. They will have a notebook check on Thursday and Friday. The notes and the packets are on my web page if they lost any of theirs. They will need Chapter 12 notes and their fitness sheets (filled out). The fitness sheet can be signed for 5 points extra credit. The physical education classes will be continuing lessons on table tennis, and badminton (Sears). They will also be doing throwing and fleeing activities that can teach them different ways to stay active(Dudley).

FACS We are finishing up the Foods & Nutrition Unit. Students are working on planning menus and making grocery lists.

Food Science We are analyzing how cooking methods affect the color and texture of vegetables.

Computer Lit. G-4We continue to create power point presentations. We are also learning how to make tri-fold brochures.

8TH Grade CA/Reading – Mrs. Lettau - We will continue the study of literary concepts/ elements – main idea and compare and contrast. We will finish the persuasive essay. Graphics II: The students in this class will begin putting together their business display boards featuring all their business advertising projects.

8th gr Art: The students in this class will transfer their people portraits to final paper and begin their illustrations.
