Certification ChecklistEarly Childhood and Childhood Education

Candidates seeking initial certification in New York State must:

1. ______Complete SUNY Geneseo Degree Program Leading to NY State Certification (Including Student Teaching and Required Seminars: Identification of Child Abuse and Maltreatment(CHD), School Violence and Prevention (SAVE), Dignity for All Students (DASA), and, additionally, for students in the Childhood with Special Education Program: Meeting the Needs of Students with Autism (AUT).

2. ______Apply for New York State Teacher Certification through the TEACH website. The Certification Application is on the TEACH system within the NYSED website. Please first read our instructions, found under “Advisement” at (left-hand menu). For questions about applying for certification contact the Graduation Records Office in Erwin 106C by calling (585) 245-5543.

3. ______ Fingerprinting and Criminal Background Check - All candidates for initial certification and all new school employees must be cleared through FBI fingerprinting and criminal background check. The costs for the fingerprinting and the background check are incurred by the candidate.

4. ______Successfully Complete Required New York State Teacher Certification Examinations (NYSTCE)

______edTPA (elementary OR special education) The edTPA you select becomes your first certification area.

Elementary Education - minimum passing score 49 total score and average rubric score of 2.73

All other handbook areas – minimum passing score 41 total score and average rubric score of 2.73

Elementary Education - mastery cut score 57 total score and average rubric score of 3.20

All other handbook areas – mastery cut score 48 total score and average rubric score of 3.20

5. ______Submit your verification of your online Certification Application, with processing fee ($10 check made payable to SUNY Geneseo or a $10 cash receipt from the Student Accounts office), to Registrar’s Office, Erwin 102. (See directions at website)

The required verification is found by returning to TEACH Home and selecting Account Informationunder the Inquiry Links heading. This will bring up a menu box, where you should select Certificatesand then Go. A screen print of this page must be submitted. Please also write your G# and graduation term (i.e. May 2014) at the top of the page.

Additional Teacher Certification Exam Information

The edTPA will be completed during student teaching. To find out more about edTPA and to register for submission:

Educating All Students Test (EAS) should be completed after all education coursework has been completed. It can be taken before or during student teaching. You can NOT be absent from student teaching to take a certification test.

Content Specialty Test (CST) should be taken after the “content” has been completed. For adolescence candidates that would be when the major coursework is complete. Elementary education candidates should take the multi-subjects test after the general education coursework and related requirements have been completed. The students with disabilities content test OR the early childhood content test should be taken after block V. The CST can be taken before, during or after student teaching. You can NOT be absent from student teaching to take a certification test.
