Honors Geometry Project Two:

Famous Structures From Around the World

Objective: To research a notable structure from around the world and discover the mathematics involved in its construction.

Requirements:

  1. Research Paper:
  2. Write a 2-3 page report, double-spaced with 1 inch margins all around, 12 font, Times New Roman (excluding title page, bibliography, and images) about a famous architectural structure. (check the next page for the ones you can not choose)
  3. Title page must include the following elements:
  4. Name of structure
  5. Picture of Structure
  6. When and where it was built
  7. Your name, class, period, and date(e.g. Joe Smith, Honors Geometry, 1st Period, January 11, 2005)
  • Report must include the following information:
  • Name of architect or group that designed and built the structure
  • When and where the structure was built
  • What was the main reason the structure was built for(i.e. what was it used for)
  • The dimensions of the structure
  • The math/geometry associated with the structure
  • The materials used to build the structure
  • How long did it take to build?
  • The biggest obstacle(s) in building the structure
  • Is the structure still standing and/or used? If so, what is it used for now?
  • The materials that you used on your scale model
  • The biggest obstacle(s) you had to overcome to build scale model
  • Bibliography
  • Cite all references using the correct bibliographic format(Check the internet for MLA format)
  1. Scale Model:
  2. Cannot use pre-manufactured materials
  3. Must be creative
  4. Must be reasonably proportional to original(to the best of your ability)
  5. Include a label for the scale factor
  1. Presentation:
  2. Grade based on preparedness, clarity, and length
  3. 2-5 minute presentation on structure that you researched and the scale model
  4. Power point presentation recommended
  5. May use 3 x 5 index cards(Do not overuse them on presentation)
