Elbows Off The Table And Dig In: Calling all chefs! This is a hands on cooking class where you will learn a variety of culinary skills. This class will include basic etiquette, table preparation, and safety in the kitchen. Then it will be time to get your hands dirty by experimenting with a variety of techniques and recipes that will tickle your taste buds. This semester’s class will focus on breakfast and brunch.
Bringing Books Alive: Meet the fairies of Fablehaven with Seth and Kendra Sorenson, dip your toes in the chocolate river at Willie Wonka’s factory and soar to Neverland with Peter Pan and Tinkerbell! These are only a few of the things you will be doing while exploring the magical pages of books for children of all ages. We will be reading sections of books and discussing them with hands on activities and interactive learning opportunities. The goal of this class is to get the children excited about reading and to introduce them to a wide variety of books. Join our quest this semester as we focus on fantasy and adventure.
Hammer, Nails, & Glitter Glue: Come and discover all the things you can do with your hands, a few supplies, and your imagination. In this class you will learn how to build and create using both the seasons and the world around you as inspiration. Along with practical skills, you will develop and expand your creativity. Come build your abstract reasoning, problem solving, goal setting, fine motor skills, patience, and craftsmanship.
Electronic Discovery: Have you ever flipped a light switch, turned on a computer, or woken up to an alarm clock and wondered how those things work? In this class you’ll get to find out. Come experiment with us as we discover all things electronic. Breadboards, meters, wires and more! We’ll take apart old electronics to look inside, use snap circuits to make something new and get creative with some odd objects to see what they have to do with electricity.
Mind Body Challenge: Come and get active! We will learn about healthy eating and a new body system each week, and have monthly healthy taste testing. We will learn different ways to stay active, from yoga to running, tabatas and HIIT, circuit training and body weight exercises and everyday playtime.
Business for Kids: Have you ever had a great idea for a product or a business? Do you enjoy making and selling? Then this is the class for you! We will learn what it means to become an entrepreneur and go through the process of creating and running our own business. From concept and planning, logo creation, advertising, management to final sales and accounting. At the end of the semester, we will have a kids business showcase day where you can sell your service or merchandise.
Wilderness Survival: Ever wonder how you would survive if you got lost in the wilderness? Through hands-on activities we will learn about survival shelters, first aid, and fire building. We will also learn map reading skills, and how to find food and water. Don’t go into the wilderness unprepared, join us for fun, games, and simulated survival experiences to learn the skills you need to have fun and be safe while out exploring this beautiful world.
The Happy Kid’s Toolbox!: Seven "tools" to being a happy kid!
Let's build ourselves and those around us up! We will assemble a toolkit that will help us live a happy and helpful life! Learn how to be the best “spark plug” you can be! Fun crafts, activities, discussions, games, stories and role playing will be part of our "tool box" to carry with us everywhere we go! We will use the Covey Leader in me and Seven Habits for a wonderful class in teaching kids how to create a growth mindset that will sharpen and mold them into a dynamo doer!
Re-Trend: Key chains, t-shirts, skateboard graphics, logo design, duct tape wallets and more. In this class students will learn to take common items around them and re-invent them to make a style that reflects their own. Projects will incorporate elements of jewelry making and design that appeals to both boys and girls of all ages. Students will find out how to make items they can use to decorate their stuff, wear, and give as gifts while practicing their creativity, repurposing skills, and ingenuity.
Bits & Pixels: Whether you are interested in fashion design, geology, or dance computer skills are a necessity! In this class students (no matter their age or reading ability) will learn the basics of coding and digital literacy. Before even touching a computer students will participate in a series of “unplugged” activities which will teach basic coding concepts such as sequencing, loops, conditionals and functions through object lessons and kinesthetic activities. Then students will explore a series of game-like exercises in order to see how that concept applies to the world of computer programming. Other concepts such as computer etiquette and safety will be covered. Oh, and also, during the course of the semester we’ll probably take apart a computer or two just to see what’s inside. (Note: This class will require students to bring their DaVinci laptop or another compatible device with them from home every week.)
Kids Care: Often volunteer opportunities seem big and difficult for kids to participate in. In this class students will find that there are many meaningful ways to offer service in the community around them. Students will participate every week in a different type of community service that will benefit their city, school, and family. Working together, kids learn to make decisions and contribute to their community and the world around them. They gain awareness of others and problem solve on ways to make a positive change. Along with the in-class projects opportunities for optional out of school family service learning will be offered for students to extend their in-school experiences beyond the classroom.

DESIRED RESULTS FOR STUDENT LEARNING
COLLABORATION: A foundation of the school, as represented in the mission statement, is that learning is a social activity, involving students, families and educators working together as a team, with support from the community. Collaborative based learning will result in students who have skills to learn from others and work effectively with others for a common goal. Collaborating will help me develop the necessary skills to learn from others and work effectively with others for a common goal.
COMMUNICATION: Central to collaboration are skills for communication. DaVinci promotes open and multidirectional communicative processes in which all stake holders are respected and valued. An emphasis on communication will result in students who have skills to effectively work in groups by articulating their own and appreciating others’ ideas. Communicating effectively will teach me to articulate my ideas and appreciate the ideas of others.
CITIZENSHIP: The DaVinci mission is to create a supportive environment where diversity and individuality are welcome. Citizenship plays into this by expecting and promoting civic responsibility inside and outside the school. Promoting citizenship will result in students who act in ethical, responsible, and civically minded ways. Contributing to my community and acting in an ethical and responsible way will help me become a good citizen.
CONTEMPLATION: DaVinci’s mission is to promote critical thinking and problem solving skills in students. Encouraging contemplation will result in students’ use of these skills to reflect on, analyze, and evaluate their own processes of thinking. Contemplating my own ideas and processes of thinking will allow me to form opinions based on and supported by my own analyses, evaluations, and reflections.
COMPETITIVENESS: We strive to surpass yesterday’s accomplishments, and prepare diligently to excel in every arena. We have the confidence to compete when success is not assured. We persevere in the face of challenge, and view every failure as the basis for a future success.
CURIOSITY: We hunger to know more, and remain committed to continuous learning. We embrace high standards of expertise. We are driven to learn, to teach, to uncover the secrets of the natural world, and to expand the body of knowledge.
