Instructional Strategies / A variety of strategies and methods will be implemented throughout the school year including: New American lecture, compare and contrast, Document Based Questions, APPARTS, cooperative learning groups, debates, discussion formats, inductive learning, independent research skills, projects – artistic and written, oral presentations, supplementary handouts, technology and visual organizers. Technology plays a vital role in every day instruction and activities, and all students are expected to check the blog for additional information regarding class assignments and extra credit opportunities.
Advanced Content
Expectations / The course framework and instructional strategies for this course are differentiated in content, pacing, process skills emphasis, and expectation of student outcomes from the typical Georgia Studies course. Course content has been designed for mastery and extension of state and district performance standards. The course is appropriate for students who have high achievement and interest in social studies. Durham Middle School has established criteria and guidelines to identify students who will be successful in this course. Students are placed in this class according to specified indicators of demonstrated exceptional ability and motivation. Students must meet continuation criteria to remain in the class.
Late Work
It is each student’s responsibility to turn in his or her work on time. Late work will be accepted with a 25 point deduction for each day late from the grade they would have made up to two days late. Major projects will carry a 10 point deduction from the grade it would have received per day late. Students should use their agenda to track assignments and check the blogs for any questions concerning any assignment. Periodically throughout the year, a student MAY be assigned to complete missing assignment in the ZAP (Zeros Aren’t Permitted) program. If work is complete within the program, a 20 point deduction will be taken from the grade earned. / Grading

B 80-89
C 74-79
D 70-73
