Vessels you should know on the supine male cadaver
Arteries
1. Identify the ascending aorta where it leaves the heart (obviously, the latter has been cut out).Identify the arch of the aorta and the descending aorta in both the thorax and abdomen.
2. Return to the arch of the aorta and identify the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotidartery, and left subclavian artery. Observe how the brachiocephalic trunk divides into theright common carotid artery and the right subclavian artery.
3. On both sides, identify how the subclavian artery forms the axillary artery and then thebrachial artery. On the left side, identify the division of the brachial artery into radial artery
andulnar artery,
4. Return to the abdominal descending aorta and identify how it divides into the common iliac arteryon each side. Identify how the common iliac artery on each side divides into an external iliacartery and an internal iliac artery.
5. On the right side, observe how the external iliac artery forms the femoral artery.
Veins:
6. Identify the superior vena cava high in the thorax, and how this is formed by the junctions of theright and left brachiocephalic veins. On both sides, identify how these are continuations of the axillary veins, which are continuations of the brachial veins.
7. On the right side, identify the internal jugular vein as it joins the brachiocephalic vein on that side.
8. In the abdomen, identify the inferior vena cava. Observe how this is formed when the right and left common iliac veins join together. On the right side, identify how the common iliac vein hastwo large branches, the internal iliac vein and the external iliac vein, and how the externaliliac vein on that side is a continuation of the femoral vein in the thigh.
9. Identify the greater saphenousvein in the right thigh and how it joins the femoral vein
10. In the abdomen, identify the renal veins on both sides as they join the inferior vena cava.
