Narrators (as many as you need)

Narrator 1 Julie Boynton lives in a big white house in the country beside a farm. There is a big dark forest behind the house.

Narrator 2 Julie lives alone with her parents. Her parents are very busy and they both go to work every day in London.

Narrator 3 Julie isn’t lonely because she has a very special talent. Julie has a sixth sense:

Narrator 4 She can understand animals and she can talk to them. She talks to the animals on the farm and in the forest.

Narrator 5 She never tells her parents she can speak to animals. Her parents don’t understand animals.

Narrator 1 Julie thinks they don’t like animals because she can’t have a dog or a cat or a little hamster.

Narrator 2 And Julie’s parents don’t believe in special senses. Her parents are scientists. They only believe in facts.

Narrator 3 One Friday morning Julie is having breakfast:

Daddy Listen Julie!

Julie Yes, Daddy?

Daddy I want you to be very good. An important man is coming to stay at our house this weekend.

Julie Why is he an important man, Daddy?

Daddy Because he has very good ideas. I hope he likes us. Perhaps he will come and work in my laboratory. So don’t tell him silly stories.

Narrator 4 Julie’s parents think she has too much imagination.

Julie I will be good, Daddy.

Narrator 5 Julie is in bed when the important man comes. She doesn’t see the man.

Narrator 1 When Julie gets up on Saturday she hears her father talking on the telephone.

Daddy Is that the police? Can you help us? Come quickly. Our visitor went out in the dark forest, last night before bed. This morning he isn’t here. He’s lost.

Julie Daddy! Daddy! I can help find the important man.

Daddy Oh Julie, don’t tell me silly stories now. Go and play.

Narrator 2 Julie runs out of the house and runs to the farm. She calls the farmer’s dog.

Julie Bruce, help me. We have to find an important man for Daddy. The man is in the forest.

Bruce (dog) Don’t worry, Julie, I can help you. My nose can tell us where he is.

Meg (cat) And I can come too, I’ve got very good eyes. I can help.

Narrator 3 Bruce and Meg go into the forest with Julie. Bruce sniffs and sniffs but he can’t smell the man.

Bruce (dog) Don’t worry, Julie. I’ve got an idea. We need someone who can see in the dark and is awake at night.

Meg (cat) Yeah, Saul, the owl, will help us.

Julie Great idea!

Narrator 4 They go to the tree where the owl lives. Meg climbs up the tree and wakes Saul up.

Meg (cat) Saul, we need help. A man is lost in the forest.

Saul (owl) I know where he is. Follow me, I will show you the place.

Narrator 5 The owl is flying above their heads. The others follow him and suddenly Bruce says:

Bruce (dog) It’s alright now, I can smell the man.

Meg (cat) Look over there! I can see his footprints!

Julie Oh thank you Saul! You can fly back to sleep now!

Saul (owl) My pleasure and good bye my friends.

Bruce, Julie Good bye! Thanks! See you soon!

Meg (cat) I can see him. The man is sitting behind that tree. Now he can hear us.

Man Is there anybody? Help me please, I’m lost.

Julie Hello, I’m Julie Boynton. Please follow me and my friends. We will bring you back home.

Man Thank you so much. I had a bad night here in the forest.

Bruce (dog) So then, let’s go home now.

Man Looking at you and the animals. It looks like they can talk to you.

Julie Yes they can, but please don’t tell Daddy. Daddy doesn’t like silly stories.

(All are laughing!)
