MATH 1315, 005,College Algebra for Economics & Business Analysis

Time and Place of Class Meetings: TTh2:00 pm -3:20 pm in PKH 319.

Description of Course Content:

Presents material covered in a traditional algebra course but with emphasis toward business

applications, such aslinear equations, systems of linear equations, systems of linear inequalities,

elements of matrix algebra and probability.

Requirements:Passing score on the mathematics placement test.

Required Textbook: Mathematical Applications for the Management, Life, and Social Sciences,

9th Edition, byHarshbarger/Reynolds.

Course Content:

  • Chapter 0: Algebraic Concepts
  • Chapter 1: Linear Equations and Functions
  • Chapter 2: Quadratic and Other Special Functions
  • Chapter 3: Matrices
  • Chapter 4: Inequalities and Linear Programming
  • Chapter 7: Introduction to Probability

Assignments and Quizzes:

  • Do the assigned homework problems immediately following coverage of the corresponding material in class. Do not turn in assignments. MATH Clinic in PKH 314.
  • Quizzes are unannounced.

Descriptions of Examinations with Due Dates:There will be 3 exams and final exam.

  • Exam 1: September 21
  • Exam 2: October 14
  • Exam 3: Nov. 9
  • Final exam: December 11, 12:00 pm – 2:30 pm

The final exam will be departmental, i.e., all sections of Math 1315 will take the same exam and the grades will have the same weight in each section. The final exam will be comprehensive.

Make-up Exam Policy:Please contact me () if you are going to miss an exam. Make-up exams can be given if you have a situation beyond your control (illness, family emergency, etc.), you must provide documented evidence to be allowed to make-up an exam.

Attendance Policy:

  • Attend all class meetings. Bring your Mav ID card, calculatorand Scantron Form No. 882-E to class every day.
  • Read a chapter before the corresponding lecture.
  • Bring your calculator and Scantron Form No. 882-E to exams. No sharing of calculator and no cell phone calculator during quizzes and exams. Use No. 2 pencil only on Scantron. Erase completely or white out to make corrections on Scantron. The grade is final after the machine grading.
  • Remain in class until dismissed or until class time expires.
  • Turn off all cell phones, beepers, chiming watches, etc.
