Lifeguard Training Manual (Borough has 7 copies to loan out)–
Optional (free digital copy available at go to Course Materials, “Lifeguarding Manual”)
Water Bottle
Swim Suit & Towel

Course Completion Requirements:
- 100% attendance (NO EXCEPTIONS).
- Successfully complete pre-test:
- 1. Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. You may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
- 2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. You should place your hands under your armpits.
- 3. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. ■ Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Your face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. ■ Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. ■ Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object while keeping your face at or near the surface so you are able to get a breath. You should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
- Attend and actively participate in all course sessions
- Demonstration of mature, responsible, safe and appropriate behavior
- Successfully complete required physical skills and final skill scenarios.
- 80% on the written exams.
Course Certification:After completing the course the student will have the following certifications:
American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED
- Valid for 2 years

Lesson 7: Cardiac Emergencies, AED (40 minutes)
- 2 Lifeguards Continue Work on Submerged Passive Victim, No Breathing, No Pulse
- 2 minutes allotted for water rescue, 3 minutes 1- rescuer CPR
- Perform Submerged Victim Rescue, Extract from Water
- Perform Primary Assessment,
- Provide Care for Victim who is NOT breathing and DOES NOT have a pulse
- 3 Minutes of CPR on Mannequin
Lesson 8: When Things Do Not Go as Practiced (30 Minutes)

- Head Splint: Submerged Victim in Shallow Water
- Spinal Backboarding: Shallow Water
- Head Splint: Face-up & Face-Down At or Near Surface in Deep Water

**It typically takes less than 1 hour to take the lifeguarding multiple choice exam, however more time is allotted for anyone who wishes it.**
