Applicant Types
The Foundation will only accept applications from individuals, groups of researchers, committees or project-focused foundations. Chief investigators must be employed through an Institution e.g. Hospital, University, Institute.
Grant Size
The Research Foundation awards grants of between AUD$10,000 and AUD$250,000 each. “Big picture”, collaborative studies (along the lines of NHMRC applications) are encouraged. The Research Foundation retains the right to alter the amounts specified. International grants are paid in Australian Dollars.
Grant Period
Grants are normally made for projects which can be completed within 12-48 months. The reviewers will need to be satisfied that the project can be carried out within the time scale envisaged and that the person(s) carrying out the project has the appropriate expertise and any other relevant resources to conduct and/or supervise the project.
Commencement of Funding
If the application is successful, funding is likely to commence at the end of March in the following year and requires a signed Deed of Agreement. Funding is normally paid biannually, dependent on receipt of progress and financial reports. Payments will only be made upon receipt of a valid invoice from your institution.
Applicants are encouraged to ensure that their proposals contain sufficient details about proposal research designs to facilitate their proper evaluation.
Career Objectives
Applicants should outline clearly their career development objectives for the next four years and relate these to the development of their research career.Explain how your administering institution will expect to use the outcome of this research. Include detail of past and present collaborations and any publications resulting from these collaborations. Please include your CV.
Applicants should provide no more than 2000 words. As necessary, the Research Foundation will pursue additional information with particular applicants. Reference should be made to any related or similar projects in the same general area. Applicants will be scored against scientific quality, feasibility and overall impact.
Budget
Appropriate salary scales for staff should be provided, with the applicant stating the basis for the salary scale chosen. Minor items of equipment such as postage, stationery, printing, travel and secretarial services will not normally be granted. In general, grants will be made for activities rather than for items of equipment. The budget must only include Direct Costs, i.e. costs that are directly related to the research objectives of the project. The budget must not include indirect costs including infrastructure, overheads or administration costs that are expected to be provided by the institution as standard support for researchers.
For international applicants, it is important to note that the budget must be submitted in Australian dollars (AUD$). All grants are awarded in Australian dollars only and will be subject to the currency exchange rate at the point of bank transfer. Please ensure you consider the exchange rate between your home country and the Australian dollar when you prepare your budget. The total amount requested in the application, and the budget detail, must be in AUD$.
Monitoring of Successful Applications
A brief progress report is required annually indicating the project’s advancement throughout the duration of the grant. Where grants are approved for projects extending beyond one year, funding for second and subsequent years will be dependent on the Foundation receiving a suitable progress report.
At the conclusion of all projects (within six months) a report should be sent to the Research Foundation of Cerebral Palsy Alliance outlining comprehensively the results of the project. This should be accompanied by a more concise report, in lay terms, which may be drawn upon in publicising the Research Foundation’s activities and their results.
Publications and Reports
The support of the Research Foundation should be acknowledged in an appropriate way in any publications or reports resulting from projects funded by the Research Foundation. A copy of such published papers and reports should be sent to the Foundation following their publications to ensure that accurate records of the productivity resulting from funding can be kept.
Grants Selection
Each proposal is reviewed by a number of external reviewers. In assessing applications, the Research Foundation will draw upon the advice of a research advisory panel regarding the relative merits of particular proposals.
Closing Date
The closing date is the 31stAugust of the current year. Applications must be emailed by 5.00 pm on that date. As the Research Foundation must adhere to a strict timetable, no late applications or amendments to applications can be accepted under any circumstances.
