CLASS TITLE:SENIOR COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING SUPERVISOR

ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)

This is nursing work supervising registered nurses, community health nurses, advanced registered nurse practitioners, clinical associates, and/or community health nursing supervisors in a specialized or large generalized public health program or supervising all nursing activities in a branch public health department. The primary duty of the employee(s) in the position(s) allocated to this class is to spend the majority of time communicating with, motivating, training and evaluating employees, planning and directing their work; and having the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, layoff, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward or discipline subordinate employees or to effectively recommend such actions.

  • Motivates employees to improve the quality and quantity of work performed.
  • Plans work loads, work flows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees.
  • Evaluates employees through establishing evaluation criteria and responsibilities and meeting regularly with employees to ensure the established criteria are met.
  • Trains employees in methods for performing an effective and efficient job.
  • Communicates on a regular basis with employees both individually and in staff meetings.
  • Directs the work of employees to ensure best use of time and resources.
  • Advises and counsels nursing personnel about professional growth and advanced education.
  • Assists with developing and revising nursing procedures and making surveys, studies and reports.
  • Aids subordinate nurses in developing professional knowledge and skills.
  • Participates in planning and promoting a specialized program of public health nursing by interpreting staff nursing needs to administration
  • Supervises the work of public health nurses; teaches and orients nurses to general policies, programs, and procedures; and advises the staff on problems arising in the work.
  • Directs the nursing activities of a branch public health department.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in nursing or a related field and two years of professional nursing experience, including one year of pediatrics or public health nursing, and licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code 210-8.27; or
  • Two years of experience as a Community Health Nurse or in a higher level community health nursing class with the State of Florida.
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university in nursing, nursing education, public health, or a related field can substitute for the required general professional nursing experience.
