Text: Calculus, by Stewart

Catalog Description: Continuation of Calculus II. Algebra and calculus of vectors; functions of several variables; partial differentiation; multiple integration; vector analysis. Prerequisite: MATH 31.

Prerequisites: Math 31 with a grade of “C-“or better, or the equivalent

Text: Calculus, by Stewart

Coverage: Chapters 12 – 16.

Homework
Homework will be assigned frequently and will be due at the beginning of the next class meeting. I may allow some time at the beginning of most class periods for questions on the homework, but you should go to the math lab or come to my office hours if you need help completing the assignment. Homework will be collected during dead week, so plan accordingly.

Not all homework problems will be graded. I will select a sample of problems on which to base your grade for each assignment. Homework will be graded on a scale from 0 to10.

Late homework will not be accepted under any circumstance.

Homework Solutions and Supplementary Course Materials

I will assign mostly even numbered exercises from the text. Nevertheless, you may wish to have a copy of the student solutions for the text. Also, tutors in the Math Lab in BRH-118 can check your solutions against the solution manual.

Writing Component

Every student is expected to complete story problems and case studies that develop the key concepts of the course. In addition, several assignments, possibly involving the use of technology, will require written responses.

Examinations
There will be three midterm examinations and a comprehensive final examination.

The final will only be given at the officially designated time (shown below). Check your schedule now, if you have multiple finals on the same day as the final for this class, you may wish to drop this class.

Final Exam Friday, May 21, 10:15 am – 12:15 pm

Grading

The grade you earn will be a weighted average of your scores on the components below:

Component Weight

Homework 10%

Midterms (3) 60%

Final Exam 30%

At the end of the semester I will drop your lowest 3 homework scores.

Makeup exams or quizzes will not be allowed unless you have a medical emergency which can be substantiated with a note from an M.D. If you feel that you are too ill to attend an exam, be sure to visit a doctor and have them write a note to that effect. Also, email me as soon as possible describing your condition, what medical appointments you’ve made, etc.

Letter grades will be assigned according to the following percentages:

88% - 100% A

75% - 87% B

60% - 74% C

45% - 59% D

below 50% F

Plus and minus grades will be assigned according to the instructor’s judgment.

Drops

You may drop this course without penalty until Friday, February 19. After Friday, March 5, you must be passing this course (have a grade of C or better) and must have a written medical excuse from a M.D. in order to drop this course.

Attendance

You are expected to attend class regularly. If, for some reason, you are unable to attend, you are responsible for material presented in class (whether or not it is covered in the text), and all announcements made in class.

Calculators

You should own a calculator that is capable of doing basic calculations. Graphing calculators, such as the TI-84 and TI-89, are recommended. However, all work on exams and homework must be accompanied by appropriate derivations to receive credit, unless otherwise noted.

Course Policies

Homework should reflect your own effort, and a copy of another’s work will not be accepted for credit. If you wish to talk to me, I am available during my scheduled office hours in room 146 in Brighton Hall (the Math/History Building), and at other times by special arrangement.

Cheating

Do not cheat. Academic integrity is of utmost importance to me. I will not hesitate to assign an “F” to students who are cheating. Cheating incidents will also be reported to the Dean of Student Affairs.
