Team Philosophy

TheMt.HoodAquaticstrainingphilosophyismorethanjust divingintothepoolandswimminglapsinpreparationfor competition.Weuseascientificapproachtowardthetraining ofourathletes.

Mt.HoodAquaticsisacompetitiveswimmingteamoffering year-roundinstruction,training,andcompetitiontoyoung people.Professionalcoachesinterestedinhelpingdevelop successfulpeopleaswellassuccessfulswimmersdesignthe Mt.Hoodprogram.Tothisend,thefollowingteamobjectives havebeensetforth:

1)Toprovidephysicalfitness,properconditioning, developmentofself-esteemanda positiveself-imagethrough participationincompetitiveswimming.

Althoughweareaswim"Team",swimmingisalsoavery individualsport!Itenableseachandeveryswimmerto progressathis/herownrateinbothindividualskilllevelsand teamlevels.

Mt.HoodAquaticsbelievesstronglyinthe"TEAM"concept.All membersoftheteamandtheirfamiliesshouldsupportand shareinthegloryofallteamswimmersingoodtimesandbad. Thisconstantsupportcreatesan atmospherethatencourages thephysical,emotional,andintellectualgrowththatswimming provides.Itis ourgoaltodevelopbothgreatswimmersand confidentmenandwomenwhocanbeproudofthemselves throughaPOSITIVEswimmingexperience.

History

Mt.HoodAquaticswasofficiallyformedinFebruary2009with themergeroftwolong-timerivalteams:Mt.HoodSwimTeam andDavidDouglasSwimClub.Seekingtobettersupportthe communityandfosterthecompetitivegrowthof theswimmers, thesetwoteamscombinedforcestocreatethepremierswim organizationintheNorthwest.WithsupportfromMt.Hood CommunityCollege,theBlackandRedhitthewaterwith200 plusswimmersandaformidablecoachingstaff.

The Club

MHAisamemberofUSASwimming.Itisanon-profitclub staffedbyunpaidvolunteersandpaidcoaches.Ourtraining centersareatfourlocations:Mt.HoodCommunityCollege AquaticCenter(MHAC),ReynoldsCommunityPoolandthe DavidDouglasandBarlowHighSchoolpools.

Parentsareinvitedandencouragedtoattendthemonthly ParentBoardMeetingheldattheMt.HoodAquaticCenterthe thirdThursdayofeachmonth.Atthesemeetingsdecisionsare maderegardingteambusiness,upcomingmeetsand fundraising.

Team Structure

Inkeepingwiththephilosophyofprovidingaqualityswimming programforyoungpeopleofallages,abilitiesandinterest levels,Mt.HoodAquaticsoffersseverallevelsofprofessional instructionandtraining.Thecoachingstaffwilldeterminethe levelwithparentagreement.

Mt. Hood Swim Lessons

Thislevelisdesignedto introduceyoungswimmersto the sportofswimming.Emphasisisonteachingthefundamentals ofthefourcompetitivestrokesbymeansofdrillsandgames thatmakeswimmingfun.Schedule:1-2practicesperweek withnomeets.

White Team

Thisgroupisforswimmerswhocanproperlyperformthefour competitivestrokesandarereadytolearnmoreadvanced stroketechniques.Swimmerswillbeworkingharderandwill needplentyoffamilyencouragement.Swimmersbeginto participateinmeetsatthispointandbegintoseerewardsfor theirefforts.Theindividual'simprovementisourprimary objective.Trainingschedule:3practicesperweekplusinter- squadanddualmeets.

Red Team

Thisgroupisa transitionallevelinwhichswimmersmovefrom primarilystrokeinstructiontoactualcompetitivetraining. Carefulattentionisgiventostroketechnique,butanequal emphasisbeginstobeplacedonlearninghowtotrain.Regular attendanceisstronglyencouragedinordertoachievethe maximumbenefitfromtraining.TrainingSchedule:5practices perweekplusinter-squad,dualandinvitationalmeets.

Gold Team

ThisteamconstitutesthefirstleveloftheMt.Hoodprogramat whichtrainingis emphasized.Swimmersatthislevelare providedastrongconditioningbackgroundthatwillprepare themtocompeteatthehigherlevelsofUSASwimming.This

teamprovidescommittedandmotivatedyoungswimmerswith anopportunitytotrainseriouslyandsetgoalsforStateand Regionalcompetitions.TrainingSchedule:5-6practicesper weekplusacomprehensivemeetschedule.

Senior ITeam

Thisgroupisanintroductionto theSeniorteam,MHA’shighest

level.SwimmerspracticeinconjunctionwiththeSeniorIII teamatMt.HoodCommunityCollegewhilemaintaininga trainingandmeetschedulesimilarto GoldTeam.Training Schedule:5-7practicesperweekplusacomprehensivemeet schedule.

Senior III Team

ThisgroupisthemostcompetitivelevelwithintheMHA structure.Swimmersatthislevelareprovidedatraining programtoallowthemto successfullyachievetheirindividual, aswellas teamgoals.TherearerequirementssetbytheHead CoachtojoinandremainontheSeniorIIIteam.Training Schedule:7-10practicesperweek.

Senior Recreation/Recreational

Thistraininggroupisgearedtowardathletesthatwishto competeatthehigh-schoolleveland/orswimtostayinshape. Swimmersattendupto threepracticesperweek.The Recreationallevelmaynotcompeteinmeets.

Masters

Parents andCoaches

TheCoachesandparentsofMHAarea teamandarededicated toprovidingaprogramthatwillenableeachathletetolearn

thevalueofstrivingforself-improvementto theoptimallevel. TheCoachesofMHAaretrainedtoguideanddirectthe childrenintheirswimmingdevelopment;theparentswillaid thisprocessbyactivelyparticipatinginMHAclubactivitiesand positivelyencouragingtheirswimmer(s).

Itisthejobofthecoachestoofferinstructionandconstructive criticisminthedevelopmentofaswimmer,andtheparent's responsibilityto providetheloveandencouragementthat bolstertheswimmer'sconfidence.

Grievance Procedure

Onoccasion,parentsorswimmersmayhaveconcernsthat mightrequirespecialattentionbycoachesor theMHAboards. Suchconcernsshouldbefirstaddressedinapre-arranged meetingwiththeswimmer’scoach.Ifadditionalattentionis needed,theHeadCoachshouldbecontacted.Finally,issues maybeescalatedtotheMHAExecutiveBoard.

Coaching Staff

TheMt.HoodAquatics’coachingstaffconsistsofaHead Coach,SkipRunkle,andseveralassistantcoachesforeach levelof training.TheHeadCoachdirectsandinstructsthe seniorswimmersandtheassistantcoaches.

Head CoachSkip Runkle

CoachSkipRunklebecametheheadcoachat Mt.Hoodin Septemberof2008.SkipcoachedatMultnomahAthleticClub from1981– 2008,wherehehadtremendoussuccess,leading theteamtofourtop10finishesatSeniorNationals.During Skip'stenure,thirteenofMAC'sswimmersrepresentedtheUSA ininternationalcompetitionand MACswimmerswon8 individual nationaltitles.

In1998,SkipreceivedtheAmericanSwimmingCoaches Association'sSilverAchievementAward,giventocoacheswho haveexperienced15yearsofplacingswimmersin championshipfinalsof theNationalChampionships.Skipisone of12coacheswhohaveachievedthislevelofcoaching excellence.

Skiphasbeenonthecoachingstafffor theUSANationalTeam on13occasions,mostrecentlyas theHeadWomen'sCoachfor theUSAatthe1998GoodwillGames.Thisteamwonthegold medalintheteamcompetition.Skiphasbeentherecipientof the"OhioCoachoftheYear"awardtwotimesandthe"Oregon CoachoftheYear"awardthreetimes.Hehasbeenveryactive inUSASwimming,bothatthelocalandnationallevel.

Skip was awarded a lifetime swimming membership with USA Swimming and most recently while coaching with MHA, Skip had 3 swimmers qualify for the 2016 Olympic Trials.

CoachJim Bowe

GrowingupinSeattle,CoachBowebeganswimming competitivelywhenhewasfiveyearsoldandhasbeen coachingsincehewasnineteen.JimcoachedforDavid Douglas SwimClubsince1996andisnowthe Senior II Group

coach at our David Douglas location for Mt.HoodAquatics.Hispreviouscoachingexperience includestheKentAreaDolphinsandKennedyHighSchool.He hascoachedbothZoneandAll-StarTeams.Jimis currentlytheDavidDouglasHigh

SchoolswimteamcoachaswellastheAquaticDirectorforthe

DavidDouglasSchoolDistrict.

Coach Dennis Baker

DenniswasbornandraisedinPortlandOregon.Hestarted competitiveswimmingattheageof5 andswamforDavid DouglasSwimClubthroughhighschool.HeearnedmanyState ChampionshipsandAllAmericanhonors.Swimmingforthe UniversityofArizona,CoachBakerwasthePac-10champion twicein the200Butterfly.

A twotimefinalistandthreetimeparticipantatOlympicTrials in1980,1984,and1988andtheOregonMaleSwimmerofthe Yearin1979,CoachBakerfinishedhis"firstlife"inswimming.

His"secondlife"haslandedhimhereatMt.HoodAquatics.He beganswimmingagainin2000andwasawardedtheOregon MaleSwimmeroftheYearin2002againattheageof43.He istheoldestswimmerevertoqualifyfortheUSASwimming NationalsandnarrowlymissedbecomingtheoldestOlympic TrialsQualifierin2008bytheslimmestofmargins.

In2000,CoachBakerbegancoachingyoungerswimmersand istheHeadCoachoftheOregonReignMasters,amasters swimteamtrainingatMt.HoodAquaticCenter.Dennisloves tohelpyoungerandolderswimmersfindtheir"innerathlete"

andlovesto trainwiththeSeniorSquadandpushthemtonew heights. Dennis coaches the Red and White squads at the MHAC location.

Coach Kaela Salaz

Kaela comes to MHA having been the Head Age Group coach at her previous club, Maverick Aquatics, for the past 2 years. She has had tremendous success in developing multiple State Champions and Age Group Sectional finalists. In 2012, one of Kaela's swimmers was a Western Zone Age Group Champion. In 2012 and 2013, Kaela was selected to be on the coaching staffs of both the Oregon Western Zone Team as well as the Oregon All Star Team. Kaela enjoys coaching in our community and feels that she can offer our athletes an opportunity to build character and learn many important life skills. Her goal is to help create a culture based on all around positive attitude both on and off the pool deck. Kaela is married to husband, Jake, owns a photography studio in downtown Gresham, and enjoys competing in triathlons and Crossfit. Kaela coaches the Gold/Senior I groups at MHAC.

Coach Bobby DeRoest

Bobby DeRoest grew up in Portland and attended David Douglas High School and was a swimmer with David Douglas Swim Club (DDSC). As a swimmer, Bobby competed at Nationals, set multiple state records and was an Oregon & Sectional champion. Bobby attended Drury College in Springfield, MO, studied sports science, and was a NCAA Division II All-American. During his coaching years at DDSC, DDHS, Sandy YMCA, Sandy High School, Madras Swim Team & Madras High School he has had the privilege of coaching multiple Oregon State Champions, Zone & Sectional qualifiers, and high school graduates that have earned college scholarships. Bobby coaches the Gold/Senior I squads at the David Douglas location.

Coach JodyRash

CoachJodygrewupintheOkanoganValleyofcentral Washington,wherepoolsarefewandfarbetween.After learningtoswimatage6 ina locallake,Jodyspenther summersteachinglessons,lifeguarding,andswimming summerleagueina20-yardunheatedpool.Jodycontinuedto teachlessonsandlifeguardwhileincollege,graduatingfrom EasternOregonUniversitywithaBachelorofArtsdegreein Biochemistry.

AlthoughshehadoriginallyplannedtoattendOregonHealth SciencesUniversitytostudypediatrics,Jody'sloveforchildren ledhertoapositionasapreschoolteacherandadministrator

ofanearlychildhoodcenterinsouthernOregon.Jodyreturned tothePortlandareain2008,andearnedherMasterofArts degreeinEarlyChildhoodElementaryEducationfrom ConcordiaUniversityin2009.

JodybeganservingastheAquaticDirectorofReynoldsSwim CenterinSeptember2010,andistheheadcoachofthe ReynoldsHighSchoolswimteam.Inadditiontocoachingthe MHARedandWhitesquadsatReynolds,Jodyserves as the Director of the MHA Swim School, and also enjoys helping run swim meets.

Coach JuanVidal

JuanhasbeeninvolvedwiththeDavidDouglasswimprogram (nowMt.HoodAquatics)formanyyears.Hebeganswimming atage10andwaspartofthewinningHighSchoolStateteam (DavidDouglas)lastyearbeforegraduatingin2008.Juanhas beencoachingforMHAwhileattendingPortlandState University.HecontinuestoswimcompetitivelyforMHAand hasSeniorSectionalachievementstohisname.Heenjoys coachingandtheopportunitytopassdownhisknowledgeand experiencetoyoungaspiringswimmers.Juan coaches the Red and White squads at David Douglas and isanassettoour DavidDouglaslocation.

Coach Morgan Mattice

Morgan has been in the water almost her whole life. She started swim lessons at the age of six and started swimming competitively at the age of seven. All throughout high school (Reynolds) Morgan played water polo, where she received state recognition, and swam on the swim team, where she was a part of the state relay team. During the summer, she spent the majority of her time teaching swim lessons and lifeguarding. Now a graduate, she will be attending Mt. Hood Community College while coaching for MHA. Coach Morgan coaches the Red and White squads at the Barlow location.

Parent's Responsibilities

Registration Forms

Registrationformsfornewmembersaretobecompleted before yourchildgetsintothewater.Acashorcheckpayment includingthefirstmonthtrainingfeeandregistrationfeemust accompanyregistrationforms.Thispaymentwillbeheldfor oneweek.Attheendofthetrialweek,thepaymentwillbe processedunlessteamisnotifiedoftheswimmer’sintentionto stopparticipating.A USASwimmingRegistrationFeemustbe paidannuallyforallswimmers.

Registrationformsforreturningswimmersmustbefilledout andreturnedeveryyear.Yourcompletedformsaredueprior totheswimmerenteringthewater.Thesestipulationsare necessaryincompliancewiththelawsofUSASwimmingand forinsurancepurposes.

During this annual registration process, in addition to the USA Swimming annual registration fee, we will also charge $20.00 per year to cover the cost of caps/replacement caps (latex only) throughout the year per family (Red level and up). Silicone caps will have to be purchased separately if desired. In addition, we ask that each family bring in a case of water once per year or are given the option of paying an additional $5.00 in lieu of this.

Meet EntryFees

SwimmerspayfeeswhencompetinginUSASwimming sanctionedmeets.Thesefeeshelpoffsettheexpenseof runningthemeetaswellasprovidefundingtoassist swimmersattendingUSASwimmingChampionshipmeets.

Thesefeesaverage:$8.00-18.00facility and OregonSwimmingSurcharge,$2.00-2.50pereventfee,plus$8.00permeet,perswimmer,tohelpcover coachingexpenses.

Note:Championshipmeetfeesareslightlyhigherandthereare nomeetfeesfordualorinter-squadmeets.

Allmeetentryfeesappearonyourmonthlyinvoice.

Timing at Meets

Itisvitallyimportantforallparentstoparticipateinallswim meetswhetherhostedby MHAorbyotherclubs.Whenyour swimmergoestoameetyoushouldplantoassistwithtiming foratleastonehoureachdayofthemeet.Timersprovidea criticalbackupwhichis usediffurtherverificationisneededfor aswimmer’stimetobevalid.Thisimportantdutyisperformed ateverymeetandkeepsthemeetsrunningenthusiastically

andefficiently.

Notonlyisthisjobsimple,butalsoisagreatwaytomeet otherparentsanditgivesyouthebestseatinthehouse!If youareunfamiliarwiththedutiesofatimer,checkwith anotherparentortheheadtimer.

ThetimespenttimingatmeetshostedbyMHAcanbeapplied toyourfamilytimecommitment(seepage20).Timingdoneat ameetshostedbyanotherteamcannotbeappliedtoyour commitmenthours.

Equipment

Swimmersareresponsibletoprovideallpersonalequipment neededfortrainingandcompetition.Suits,parkasandt-shirts withtheMHAlogoareoptional.JDPence,avendorusually presentatcompetitionsandmeets,carriesmostoftheother necessaryequipmentneededforaswimmer.

Training Fees

Monthlytrainingfeesarebilledonthe1stofeachmonthand duebythe10th.

Eachmonth,an invoicewillbe senttotheswimmer’sfamilyvia

email.Trainingfeesandanymeetentryfeeswillbeincluded ontheinvoice.

MHAoffersthreeoptionsforpayingtrainingfees:

Option1– BI-ANNUALPAYMENT.Includesa5%discountfor paying6 monthsofduesbySeptember30thandApril15th.

Option2– ANNUALPAYMENT.Includesa10%discountfor paying12monthsofduesbySeptember30th.

NOTE:Options12 areONLYavailabletothosefamilies registeringandpayingbySeptember30th.Swimmers registeringandpayingafterthatdatewillpayusingoption3- monthlypayments.

Option3-12MONTHLYPAYMENTS.Thefirstpaymentisdue atregistrationandfollowingpaymentsaredueonorbefore

Returning College Training Fee Discount

MHAsupportsourteammembersaftertheyhaveentered college.SwimmersthatwereenrolledinMHAfortheirentire senioryearinHighSchoolmayreturntoswimwiththeteam duringsummermonths.Theswimmermustbeenrolledin collegeandmustpaytheratesnormallyapplicabletoWhite teamswimmers.Nofamilytimecommitmentorfundraisingwill berequiredfortheseswimmers.

Training Fee Increases

Noincreasesinfeeswilloccurduringtheswimseasonsunless approvedbythemembership.Eachyear,priortopublishing thishandbook,feesareincreasedby5%tocoverincreasing costsunlessthemembershiptakesotheraction.

Family Time and Fundraising Commitment

MHAisanon-profitteamoperatedentirelybytheeffortsof parents.

Familyparticipationandincomefromfundraisingand sponsorshiparenecessaryfortheteamtocontinueproviding thebestexperienceandtrainingtoourswimmers.While trainingfeescovercoaches'salariesandotherexpensessuch aspooltime,trainingequipmentandmeetsuppliesrequire additionalfinancialsupport.

Operatingtheteamandrunningswimmeetswouldbe impossiblewithouttheinvolvementof theMHAparents. Therefore,allfamiliesareexpectedtoassistwithteamduties andwithfundraisingactivitiesasexplainedbelow.

FundraisingCommitment

Familiesarerequiredtomeetaminimumfundraising commitmentamount.Theamountisbasedontheswimmer's levelasshownbelow:

Family Time Commitment

Volunteersmustreportthetimetheyworkbycompletinga FamilyTimeCommitmentreportingformandmailingitinalong withyourmonthlytrainingfees.Formsareavailableinthe swimmersboxesorontheMHAwebsite.

NewWhiteorNewRedfirst-timeswimmersnewtoswimming willnothaveafamilytimecommitmentfortheirfirstseason.A seasonisoneofthesix-monthperiodsdefiningeitherthe

short-courseorlong-coursetrainingperiods.

Familiesthatdonotfulfilltheirtimecommitmentlevelbythe endoftheswimyearwillbebilled$15foreachhournot satisfied.

MHArealizesthatoccasionallyunforeseencircumstancesarise andfamiliesmayhavedifficultyfulfillingtimecommitments.If thisoccurs,familiesareencouragedtomakeawrittenrequest totheparentboard.Basedontherequest,theboardmay:

Fundraisinginexcessof theminimumamountmaynotbe appliedtothefamilytimecommitment,norcanfamilytime contributedabovetheminimumlevelbeusedtosatisfy fundraisingamounts.

Terms andConditions for Participation

Mt.HoodAquatics-Anon-profit organization

1.TheyearlyclubadministrationfeeandUSASwimming registrationfeesarenotrefundableandmustbepaidprior totheswimmerenteringthewater.NewswimmerstoMHA mayparticipateforamaximumoftwoweekspriorto paymentoftheregistrationfee.

2.Atthetimeofregistration,eachfamilymustprovideone caseofbottledwatertobeusedatMHAswimmeetsor pay$5.

3.Whenaswimmerismovedfromonegrouptoanother, he/shemustpaythemonthlyfeesforthehighestgroupin whichtheyparticipate.

4. TrainingfeesarepaidasexplainedintheHandbook.

5.Meetentryfeesarepaidinadditiontothemonthlytraining feeandwillbeincludedonyourmonthlyinvoice.

6.Shouldaswimmerdecidetodiscontinueparticipationin the programwithMt. HoodAquatics,themonthlyorseasonal trainingfeecommitment,anyoutstandingmeetentryfees andanyunfulfilledfundraisingorfamilytimecommitment hourss/hehascommittedtoareconsideredanobligation

toMt.HoodAquaticsandarepayableupontermination. Extenuatingcircumstanceswillbeconsideredbythe Parents'Board.

7.AllswimmerswhoaremembersofMHAarerequiredto participateattheirhighestlevelofachievementin championshipmeets(includingrelays).

8.MHArunsentirelythroughtheeffortsofparents.All familiesareexpectedtocontributetheirtimeand fundraisingefforttotheteam.Specificrequirementsare outlinedinthehandbook.

9.Parentandswimmerhaveagreedtoabidebytherulesand regulationsstatedin MHADrugFreePolicy.Completionof consentformisnecessarytoremainamember(age12and over).

10.MHAmembersmaybephotographedatteamfunctionsfor publicpublication.

11.Eachparentandswimmerisresponsibleforreadingand understandingthecontentsofthe"Mt.HoodAquatics Handbook".

Codes of Conduct

1.Atallclubfunctions,includingpractice,socialgatherings andmeets,weexpecteachswimmerandhis/her parent/guardianstobehaveinsuchawaythattheiractions reflectpositivelyontheteam.

2.Sportsmanlikebehaviorandrespectforofficials,coaches, parents,volunteersandswimmersaretobemaintainedat alltimes.

3.Nointerferencewiththeprogressoforcausingharmto anotherswimmerduringpracticeoratanyotherswim teamfunctionispermitted.

4.Damagestopersonorpropertyaretheresponsibilityofthe swimmer,andtheparents/guardians.

5.Anyswimmerwhoisfoundtousealcohol,drugsortobacco issubjecttosuspensionfromtheteam.

6.Swimmersnotcomplyingwiththetermsofthiscontract aresubjecttodisciplinaryactionincluding,butnotlimited tosuspensionofswimmingprivilegesorexpulsionfrom MHA.

Bysigningtheswimmerregistrationform,swimmersand parentsareagreeingto theaboveTermsandConditionsand CodesofConductof Mt.HoodAquaticsinexchangeforthe privilegeofparticipatingintheactivitiesandswimming programofMt.HoodAquatics.
