State-funded school building projects greater than 5,000 square feet are required by chapter 39.35 RCW to comply with high-performance, green building requirements. School districts can use one of two green building protocols, either Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) or the Washington Sustainable Schools Protocol (WSSP).

WSSP was originally written in 2006, and updated in 2010. The WSSP Update Committee, a sub-committee of the School Facilities and Organization Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), has updated the 2010 version.The changes include:

  1. Aligning the protocol with Washington’s current energy and building code.
  2. Acknowledging the latest advances in building design, including construction materials and methods for healthy schools.
  3. Adding additional optional credit choices.
  4. Differentiating compliance requirements for new school facilities, new buildings on an existing facility, and a modernization.

The Draft WSSP 2015 is posted to the High-Performance School Buildings Program webpage on the OSPI website. We invite all interested stakeholders to review the draft update and provide comments. The comment period is open through March 6, 2015.Please send comments to .

WSSP 2015 is scheduled for release in April 2015. The new version is applicable to state-funded projects receiving D4 approval after July 1, 2015.
