Hirschfeld passed away. Robert is the grandfather of Jamie Heitbrink, Jennifer Gaston, Christi Scott, and Andrew Coleman. Among the many things we admired about him, we were always very impressed by his involvement in the community and willingness to give to others. Upon his passing, we wanted a way to Hirschfeld passed away. Robert is the grandfather of Jamie Heitbrink, Jennifer Gaston, Christi Scott, and Andrew Coleman. Among the many things we admired about him, we were always very impressed by his involvement in the community and willingness to give to others. Upon his passing, we wanted a way to honor his memory and willingness to give back to the community. A scholarship fund in his name seemed fitting. However, the more we thought about how important family was to him, we felt a bigger need not just to award scholarships in his name, but to give back to the community in a way that stood for our entire family. We thought about the obstacles that Robert and many of our relatives faced during their lives. For example, Robert underwent regular dialysis because his kidneys did not function properly, Jamie Heitbrink and others in the family live with Diabetes, many have faced cancer, and Jennifer Gaston brought her amazing son Brayden Sands into this world to love and care for as he fought Langerhans disease. Ultimately, he succumbed to this illness.
However, we realize our family isn’t alone. So many others are faced with similar challenges and there are magnitudes of causes that need support. It is virtually impossible to support them all. After years of careful consideration and debate over what more can be done to help, Jamie Heitbrink asked her cousin Jennifer Gaston to work together in rallying family and friends in support of an organization that would raise and distribute funds to further education and support medical research for diseases and illnesses that have affected our family. While we cannot physically conduct research, practice medicine, and dedicate hours to studies, we can provide support to those that do. Thus, the Hirschfeld Foundation, Inc. was born.
The name was specifically chosen. Not only does it incorporate the Hirschfeld name into the organization in memorial of family members who have passed, but it also serves as a reminder to the living and future generations that we too are at risk and need to do what we can to make a difference for ourselves and all the others in the world that are faced with the same challenges. "Foundation" was chosen for a few reasons, but mostly because of the basic meaning of the word; a strong base to build upon. Not only does the organization provide financial support for others to build upon, but the idea for the organization was based on our family and history, giving us a strong "Foundation."
Causes the organization chooses to support are not just randomly picked. They are real issues our family has dealt with and seen firsthand. No one in the Hirschfeld family will privately benefit financially from this organization. Our family is just the foundation used to aid in determining what causes to support. By choosing several causes to support, the organization will help more people in the community and in this world.
