i.Hobbs Lecture Discussion - [Dean Kathleen Boozang]

  1. Dean Boozang: (the following are shorthand notes on Boozang’s speech to the student body about the selection of Governor Chris Christie as the Hobbs lecture speaker).

a.Families are at best when faced with challenges

b.Talked to 100 students, faculty, administrators, etc

  1. Spectrum of viewpoints
  2. We are a university, law school – resolve change and conversations is through exchanging viewpoints.
  3. Ultimately to resolve a disagreement by cancelling speech is contrary to what we stand for as a university.
  4. The original funder of the event – idea was that speakers would be ideologically diverse.
  5. Last year there was pushback
  6. Christie will be speaking on judicial appointments
  7. Will be taking questions, equal time.
  8. Only ask that will be respectful.
  9. Report back from students: have a concurrent event – against the event in protest. Many students don’t support that idea. Most people wanted to be able to ask governor questions.
  10. Faculty wishes to convey: if you want another event, we will do it/support you.
  11. Pained to the core of her being by the pain this invitation has given people
  12. For those of you upset with the decision “I am sorry” – but we are a family.
  1. QUESTIONS:

a.Senator Gandhi – was there hesitation by Govs office in asking questions?

  1. Dean Boozang: no hesitation, was open to conversation.

b.Senator O’Hearn – will there be screening of questions?

  1. Dean Boozang: no pre-screening of questions.

  1. President Tesic: we stayed where we were. But the stats are two years late, we are expected to move up because of bar passage/employment.
