Education Futures Grant and Secondment Funding offers support to UWA staff in further developing innovative learning, teaching or assessment projects at UWA. Grants or three month secondment opportunities at the Futures Observatory are offered. Grant funding of up to $10,000 is available to enable a pilot project and up to $5,000 for a secondment.

It is recommended that applicants attend a Quantum Shift event to pitch project concepts and receive feedback from an experienced panel prior to submitting an application. View the Centre for Education Futures website for Quantum Shift event dates.

Priority Areas for 2017

1.  Emerging and consumer technologies and their adaption and application for higher education

2.  Learning outdoors

3.  Mobile technologies integrated into curriculum and modes of learning and teaching

4.  New approaches to video (for example, using video for assessment and feedback)

5.  Student contributions to knowledge generation

6.  Learning modes adapted to new classroom designs at UWA

Selection Criteria

Grants and/or secondment opportunities will be awarded based on the following criteria:

1.  the extent to which the project addresses radical innovation in learning and teaching

2.  the feasibility of the proposal, including a realistic timeline, budget, dissemination plan within UWA and capability of the individual/s

3.  the potential benefit for improving students learning, experience or satisfaction

4.  the potential for sharing and scaling findings across other schools and/or faculties

5.  the potential for the project to lead to teaching awards, external funding and/or publications

6.  the direct relationship to at least one of the seven principles of UWA’s Education Futures

7.  support from the applicant’s Head of School, Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning and /or Dean of Faculty or equivalent

Preference will be given to proposals that have not previously received funding from the Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT), one of its predecessor organisations, or internal UWA funding.

To note – the Centre for Education Futures is very happy and ready to support learning design for the development and innovation of all units using the Blackboard LMS tools for digital or blended learning. No need to apply for funding- simply register yourself on a Carpe Diem learning design workshop.

Eligibility and Conditions

Eligibility

1.  Open to staff employed at UWA who are currently engaged in teaching or providing professional support or development focused on improving the student learning experience.

2.  Students may be involved in projects with an academic lead.

3.  Individuals or teams are eligible to apply for grant funding.

4.  Only individuals are eligible to apply for a secondment to the Futures Observatory.

Conditions

1.  Applications will be considered for amounts normally between $5,000 and $10,000, however projects for lesser amounts will be considered.

2.  Applications are to contain a detailed budget indicating how resources will be used, e.g. technical and pedagogical support, research and evaluation activities or travel associated with the project’s conduct and/or dissemination.

3.  Applications would not normally include the following expenses within their budget:

a.  Salaries and on-costs of UWA staff

b.  Standard personal computers, tablets, smartphones or IT related equipment.

c.  Software development or purchase

d.  Student related expenses such as air fares

4. ‘Buyout’ from teaching duties may be considered, with the agreement of the Head of School.

5. Travel which is not directly related to achieving the outcomes of the project will not be funded.

6. Funding should not duplicate funding provided from elsewhere.

7. Applicants must consult the Centre for Education Futures staff prior to submitting their application if specific support or expertise is required from the Centre to underpin the project.

8. Funding will be allocated in two stages – 50% on commencement and 50% on acceptance of the completed Midway Progress Summary.

9. Funded projects must be completed, and funding expended, within twelve months of the project start date. Extensions may be granted under exceptional circumstances.

10. The applicant is responsible for ensuring that the expenditure of the funds is in accordance with the budget presented in the application and that any major variation is approved by the Education Futures Funding Selection Group.

11. Any costs in excess of the allocated funds will not be borne by the Education Futures Scholarship Program and must be sought elsewhere.

12. Upon completion of the project, any unspent funds are to be returned to the Education Futures Scholarship Program.

13. Projects will be expected to have a blog and social media presence, open to all UWA staff, with a minimum of three progress blog reports, initial, midway and final.

14. Projects will be expected to take part in a Carpe Diem learning design workshop early on in the project.

15. A summary report providing an update against specified deliverables is to be submitted to the Education Futures Funding Selection Group within two months of the project’s completion. The report is to address the selection criteria, and outline key findings, outcomes achieved, future plans and a budget expenditure statement.

16. Applicants are to identify ways to disseminate findings within the University and will be required to present findings at least one of the following events held by:

·  the Education Futures Scholarship Program

·  the Futures Observatory

·  the Centre for Education Futures conferences

·  Faculty conferences or seminars

Applicants will also be encouraged to disseminate their findings at relevant external learning and teaching events.

17. Funding is not transferable to any other institution in whole or in part.

18. The applicant(s) Head of School/Area must be consulted and agree to the application.

19. Subject to any external funding terms and conditions, any intellectual property arising out of this grant will be owned in accordance with the University’s policy on Intellectual Property, as updated or amended from time to time.

20. All members of the project team, excluding students who are involved for academic credit and staff members, must have an appropriate contract in place with the University for the duration of their involvement in the scholarship project.
