UNFAIR TAXES

The people in King Louis xvi were being heavily taxed. There were 5 main taxes that people were paying. There was the taille tax, which the people would pay the king just to live in his kingdom. Then there was the Corevee tax. The peasants would be required to work without pay for the local noble or aristocrat. There was also the Gabelle tax. This tax was specifically for salt. In thise days, salt was very valuable. Any time a pheasant bought salt, they would be forced to pay a tax to the king. The franc-fief was a tax that was required for a commoner to hold an establishment. This would make it very difficult for peasants to start a business or to make a lot of money with one. Lastly is the tithe. This is technically not a tax but since the church and the state were one, it became a tax. It was a payment made to the church in honor of God.

SOCIAL CLASSES

There were three groups of people in King Louis xvi’s kingdom. There were the 1st class people such as the rich and the religious ones. They didn’t have to pay any taxes! Then there was the 2nd class who were not rich, but yet not poor. They had to pay little to no taxes. Lastly there was the 3rd who didn’t have enough money to feed their families. Yet they were forced to pay all taxes to the king.

LIFE WITH KING LOUIS XVI

It was said that king Louis would have big balls and feast while there were people on the streets searching for money and food. He favored the rich and religious people rather than the people who actually needed help. If you were poor, then life under the ruler ship of the king was tough and he was not a likeable guy. If you were rich on the other hand, life would have been a breeze and the king was a decent man.
