Task Analysis: The student will…
Concept/Background Information:
Materials:
Body systems puzzle sheets (student version), cut out for each student or student team. The student version is already mixed up, so you can have students cut them out.
Teaching tips:
Advance preparation-
- to save time, cut out puzzle pieces in advance
Teaching strategies-
- approximate time – one 50 minute class period
Engage: Show the video clip “Introduction to Human Body” (3:35) from the video Life Science: Human Biology (Discovery Channel School) on United Streaming. Have students list the body systems introduced and write something about each. Ask questions to elicit prior knowledge about body systems.
Explore: Give each group of students a set of the body system puzzle pieces to group. For each system, there is one piece with the name of the system, one piece with the main function of the system and one piece with the major organs of the system.
Explain: Ask each group to present one or two systems to the class to verify the answers. Discuss connections between the systems.
Extend: Students use the pieces to create individual graphic organizers or notes pages in their interactive notebooks with all of the information learned.
Evaluate: Individual student responses and notes pages.
