Overview
The Social Mobility Foundation is seeking to recruit group leaders to help supervise over 150 Year 12/S5 (aged 16-17) A-Level students on residential internship programmes this summer. The young people will be high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds and they will be in London & Middlesbrough to undertake an internship within one of the following professions: Accountancy, Banking & Finance, Engineering, Law, Technology and Medicine. The group leaders will be required to live in the same accommodation as the participants in the programme and be responsible for the welfare of the young people involved.
Although the whole group will be accommodated together, the dates of the Programmes vary slightly, as below:
Medicine Programme (Middlesbrough)– 14th July – 20thJuly 2018
Herbert Smith Freehills Programme (London) – 22nd July – 31st July
Jacob’s Programme (London) – 28th July – 5th August 2018
Neil Stevens Fellowship (London) – 28th July – 5th August 2018
J.P. Morgan Programme (London) – 28th July – 11th August 2018
Linklaters Programme (London) – 5th August – 11th August 2018
Clifford Chance Programme (London) – 5th August – 11th August 2018
KPMG Programme (London) – Dates TBC but likely to be July
Person Specification
The successful candidates will be hard-working and personable. They will have some experience of working with young people, although not necessarily on a residential programme. As a strong component of the programme will involve activities encouraging university entrance, the candidates should either be current university students or university graduates. All of the group leaders will need to be both approachable and able to be firm with the young people to ensure that discipline is maintained and the group is kept safe. No knowledge of the career sectors the programmes cover is required.
Appointment is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.
Specific responsibilities
Reporting line: All group leaders will report to a member of Social Mobility Foundation staff, who will also live on-site with the group.
Group leaders will be the ‘responsible adult’ for a small group of up to 10 young people and share supervisory responsibilities for all of the young people on the programme when the group is together.
Responsibilities will include:
- Living on-site in the accommodation provided for the duration of the internships
- Monitoring the behaviour of the participating students and taking action in the event of any incident of unacceptable behaviour (which includes being absent from an activity without prior agreement, disobeying any regulation in the host accommodation or at work, any action that might or does cause damage to persons or property, or any other infringement of the Codes of Conduct agreed by the participants and their parents)
- Taking action if a participant is ill or injured, in consultation with the relevant SMF staff member
- Being aware of health and safety and child protection issues, and taking action wherever necessary to remove or alleviate dangers or risks
- Ensuring that the members of your specified group are engaging fully in all aspects of the programme, alerting SMF staff to any issues i.e. homesickness, lack of supervision in the work place, etc.
- Seeing to the smooth running of morning and evening activities, including ensuring all of the young people are in the right place at the right time and understand what is required of them
- Being actively involved in the evening activities to help the young people complete the required tasks, assisting those delivering the activities as required
- Ensuring that participants are in their own rooms at the specified time in the evening and that they are adhering to the codes of conduct
- Being ‘on-call’ should any emergencies arise during the day or night
The above list is not exhaustive and group leaders will be required to undertake other duties as determined by the SMF staff present.
Group leaders will be required to participate in training provided by the SMF before the residential internships begin and then to adhere to all aspects of that training. Group leaders will also be provided with the SMF’s safeguarding policy and all necessary risk assessments and health and safety/emergency information, and will be similarly required to adhere to all aspects of the documentation.
Payment
Group leaders will have their accommodation, travel and food costs covered and be paid £500 per week (pro rata).
