Excerpt from Writings of a Civil War Buff
Pvt. William Perry Keeney joined the 10th Iowa Co. "B" in Cape Girardeau, Mo. He had attempted to join the service prior to turning 18 but was not allowed to do so. As a result of having to join his regiment after they had left Carlisle, Iowa his name was left off of the original roster. Company "B" 10th Iowa regiment marched from Carlisle, Iowa to Iowa City, Iowa some 125 miles where they caught the train, and then went off to war. Carlisle, Iowa is my hometown, and was a wonderful place to grow up.
During his three years of service as a private in Company "B" 10th Reg't Iowa Infantry, records indicate that Pvt. Wm. Keeney and his regiment were engaged in several battles. Some of these battles are as follows:

Meet a Hartford Civil War Veteran
The young soldier featured in this photo is W.H. Hartman. Mr. Hartman's father, was J.D. Hartman, who came to Warren County in 1846 and laid out the town of Hartford. Hegave Hartford its name...using the 'Hart' from his own name. Many goods had to be brought across the river at a ford...thus, the name of Hart-ford, the oldest town in Warren County.
W.H. was reared and educated in Hartford and employed at his father's mill. At the time of the Civil War he enlisted in Company D, Thirty-fourth Regiment which was organized at Hartford, and participated in the battles of Vicksburg and Arkansas Post. Ill health sent him home after just less than a year of service.
He is just one of the many Iowans who courageously volunteered and served proudly.

Chairman’s Corner
The Dinner at the White House fundraiser earlier in the month was deemed to be a huge success by those in attendance. The food was fantastic and the re-creation of the 1861 scene was amazing. Lincoln impersonator Stan DeHaan made everyone do double takes. We’ve all seen photos of Lincoln and this man brings them to life with uncanny realism. Many in attendance were dressed period appropriately and really added a lot to the festivities.
Following is a list of those who made the night possible. The money raised will be used to help our organization cover the costs of the Civil War 150th Anniversary event at North Park during the weekend of June 10th. If anyone else in the community would like to donate to our endeavor, please call me at 989-9999 or send an email to . You may also mail a check to Carlisle Area Historical Society, P.O. Box 137, Carlisle, IA 50047. All donations are tax deductible.
