BPW EMBLEM
Throughout history, the progress of events and people has been marked by symbols. The Emblem of BPW was adopted at the 1921 National Convention and incorporates a variety of symbols to represent light, peace, communication, achievement and progress - elements to which our Federation is dedicated.
The Nike depicts strength, progress, freedom and triumph, facing squarely the winds and waves of prejudice and all other limitations. The Torch is the symbol of light, wisdom, principle and leadership. The Wand symbolizes a new day for women and represents opportunity, equality, harmony, cooperation, healing and power. The Ship of Commerce is a symbol of the entrance of women into business and the expansion of opportunities for women. The Scroll represents achievement and leadership, a record of our accomplishments in solving economic problems and establishing equality for working women. These five symbols are found within
the Golden Circle, signifying unbroken harmony and endless friendship.
FEDERATION OBJECTIVES
To elevate the standards for women in business and in the professions;
To promote the interests of business and professional women;
To bring about a spirit of cooperation among business and professional women of the United States;
To extend opportunities to business and professional women through education along lines of industrial, scientific and vocational activities.
WHAT DOES THIS FEDERATION DO?
Our organization was one of the first women’s organizations to formally endorse the Equal Rights Amendment in 1937, and we have led the drive for ratification ever since.
BPW/PA has endorsed many financial projects including: purchase of cancer research equipment, victims flood relief, scholarships, interest free grants to members, and Math Counts. It supports programs that will advance the cause or improve and promotes local, state and national projects or the status of the person, male or female, employed in business or in a profession.
It was through the efforts of our Federation that the Pennsylvania Legislature enacted the bill providing equal pay for equal work, regardless of the sex of the worker. The Pennsylvania Federation members worked tirelessly for the passage of the Pennsylvania Equal Rights Amendment. Through the efforts of this Federation, more and more qualified women are obtaining positions in government, in business, and in the professions.
Our Federation provides money for grants or loans to both undergraduate and graduate students. The funds are raised through voluntary contributions and are administered by the Education and Service Funds Committee.
In 1957, the Edith Oler Flanigan Fund was established to financially assist BPW/PA members in time of financial stress and need.

INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (ID)
Congratulations once again to Loretta Pigeon, our 2016 BPW/PA Individual Development Winner! Is your Local Organization or District considering an ID Program this year? Why not use ID to market BPW to potential members and increase visibility in your community? It’s never too early to begin planning and coordinating your 2016-2017 ID Program for a Speak-Off at your Spring District Meeting. I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that the ID Program must be presented by a trained facilitator. A list of BPW/PA Trained ID Facilitators was included in the Presidents’ Manual distributed to all LO Presidents and District Directors at the State Convention.
Might you be an individual wavering in
your decision to participate in an ID
Program? ID can provide opportunities
for personal and professional develop-
ment and networking. Are you going to be an ostrich and stick your head in the sand or are you going to be a giraffe and stick your neck out and take this opportunity to learn, grow, and allow ID to make a difference in your personal and professional life? This year’s topic will be President Susan’s theme: “An ERA with a Stellar Future!” If any District or LO is interested in an IDP or Facilitator Class, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I’m already looking forward
the 2017 BPW/PA Convention and
hearing from TWELVE (one can hope, can’t they?) of BPW/PA’s brightest stars. Karen Schmiech

BPW/PA YOUNG CAREEIST PROGRAM
Welcome to the 2016 -2017 BPW/PA year!It is an honor to be your BPW/PA Young Careerist Chair for another year. The Young Careerist Program is a primary program of BPW/PA and has been an integral part of our BPW membership since 1973. The Young Careerist Program provides our organization with new leadership, contemporary ideas, and modern visions for the future of BPW/PA, through our outstanding younger members.
The mission of the Young Careerist Program is to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of these young women. Each local and district organization should utilize their younger members to provide valuable public relations, increase recognition of BPW within their communities, and to recruit new members.
The Young Careerist Program helps us to prepare our future leaders of BPW/PA. Please encourage the eligible young women in your local and district organizations to participate in this program. It helps us to continue our journey and assists in the personal and professional growth of our members. Competition Guidelines can be found here 2016-2017 YC Competition Guidelines.doc

Hello BPW Members: As your District 8 Foundation Chair I have information regarding our Grace B. Daniels Foundation, BPW Foundation and the Edith Oler Flannigan Grant. Also, information can be found on the BPW/PA website. I would really like to see our members utilize these programs and have our local participate in a donation to these foundations/grants to assist in keeping them solvent which will mean assisting more women in receiving the funds. Attending higher education is very expensive and these foundations, scholarships and grants are a way we can help our sisters in attaining their dream of a higher education. Please consider a fundraiser or simply ask members to empty their change out of their pockets and donate at each meeting. That change will ALL add up! Juliann Doyle
