Duet reading- teacher reads just slightly faster at the same time as the student. Good for speed up pace.

7) SPRINTS- good for attention, endurance, etc.

Shorten the timing to less than one minute

30 seconds- then x2 to get the minute rate 20 seconds- then x3 to get the minute rate

15 seconds- then x4 to get the minute rate 10 seconds- then x6 to get the minute rate

8) WARM-UP-

You could do all shorter timings or you could do 1-short timing then the minute timing.

9) TEXTBOOK-

Increase timing to build endurance up to textbook reading. 5 minutes should be the longest timing and then divide by 5 to get the minute rate. (this could be really motivating to students to have a goal of being able to read 1000 words in five minutes) – good for older students needing to read longer.

10) ENDURANCE-

Listen to the student read with a paper copy in front of you- circle the word they are at when the timer passes 30 seconds- if they read more words during the first half of the timing Then shorten the timing and build to a higher goal- after they reach that aim increase back to 1 minute. Good for students who read the first sentence fast and lose focus or momentum towards the end.

11) WORDS-

Pull out the words they hesitate on or made errors in the group read and do a timing on those before the story read.
