** This particular academic plan is constructed for a single reeds (clarinet, saxophone) or flute instrumentalist. Therefore, Mus 127 is taken concurrently with Mus 392-03 (Independent Study – pedagogy) in Winter 2019. Other instrumentalists should note when the respective secondary instrument “class” courses are offered and plan to take that course in that semester concurrently with Mus 392-03 with the appropriate Applied Music instructor (who might differ from the class instructor).

Schedule is the following: Fall 17, Mus 117 – Guitar Class; Fall 17, Mus 124 – Percussion Class; Winter 18, Strings Class; Winter 18, Mus 121 – Brass Class; Fall 18, Mus 117 – Guitar Class; Fall 18, Mus 128 – Double Reeds; Winter 19, Mus 127 – Single Reeds; Fall 20, Mus 117 – Guitar Class; Fall 19, Mus 124 – Percussion Class; Winter 20, Strings Class; Winter 20, Mus 121 – Brass Class; Fall 20, Mus 117 – Guitar Class; Fall 20, Mus 128 – Double Reeds; Winter 21, Mus 127 – Single Reeds

Notes on this example of an academic plan for the Bachelor of Music – Instrumentalist*

·  UM-Flint is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. A UM-Flint Bachelor of Music requires 120 credit hours, meeting the standards of national accreditation.

·  This is one example of an academic plan for the Bachelor of Music degree for a full-time student. Variations of this plan are possible; however, the student must consult with his/her advisor regarding all decisions in scheduling.

·  Previous coursework, AP examination scores, SAT or ACT scores, other college credits or English and Foreign Language placement examinations could modify the example plan.

·  If a student is required to take remedial coursework (i.e., entering in Mus 392 instead of Mus 151 for the first semester, or placing into Mus 135 instead of Mus 141), then it is unlikely that the student will finish the degree program in four years. Study in the Spring and/or Summer might enable the completion of the degree on time.

·  If a student fails a required course and must repeat it, then completion of the 4-year academic plan is delayed and could extend beyond four years. Study in the Spring and/or Summer might enable the completion of the degree on time.

·  All academic plans constructed for the Bachelor of Music degree must be checked against the BM course worksheet. Worksheets are available in the Music office and online. Please read all department documents carefully.

·  Please keep in mind the following requirements:

•  Required GPA for the degree is 2.0.

•  A minimum of 79-82 credits in music is required

•  This academic plan gives the instrumental music student 33 upper division credits in Music; the University requires 33 upper division credits for graduation.

•  There is room for additional ensemble participation in this academic plan – especially Mus 302, Chamber Music.

·  Mus 170, Mus 226, Mus 261, Mus 262, Mus 361, and large ensemble courses will fulfill general education requirements.

·  All music students are advised by a Department of Music professor – for the entire bachelor’s degree program, not just for music courses. Consult with your advisor frequently in order to avoid making mistakes in your academic plan.
