Residency Requirement Waiver Application

Students who have special needs that cannot be met in the residence halls, but who do not qualify under the exemptions for living off-campus listed in Section 1 of the Residential Life Handbook and Contract, may apply to the Residential Life Office to request a waiver of the Colleges’ residency requirement. Because the College is committed to the role of residential living as an integral part of the student’s educational experience, such waivers will be granted only in cases of exceptional need or hard ship with substantial and compelling documentation. Application to waive the residency requirement does not automatically release a student from contractual obligations.

Please be advised that accepting initial and continued attendance at GustavusAdolphusCollege requires that students reside on campus. Students that move off-campus without approval from the College will be billed for room and board.

A request to waive the residency requirement may occur within the following process:

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to live off campus, a student must be a rising senior or junior student AND have permission from the Residential Life Office to reside off-campus through the housing selection process. Student with exceptional circumstances, either financial or medical, may apply for a waiver to the housing selection process decision.

Application for Waiver based on Financial Need

If you base your application for waiver on financial hardship, you will need to provide evidence of the hardship to the Off-campus Waiver Review Committee. You are asked to compose a letter to the committee explaining your financial hardship. You must demonstrate that dropping out of Gustavus is your only alternative to solving your hardship and you must show that you have exhausted all available resources: financial aid, grants, loans, etc. You must provide tax forms and other means of documentation to demonstrate your case. Your desire to reduce debt or remain debt free and not obtain student loans is NOT considered a financial hardship.

  4. Include with the letter a written letter of support from Doug Minter, Director of Student Financial Assistance.
  5. The committee will review the facts of your case and return a decision within 2 weeks.

Application for Waiver based on Medical Conditions or Disability Accommodation

Also, copies of medical documentation from your physician and a letter of support from Heather Dale, Director of the HealthCenter, and Laurie Bickett, Disabilities Services Coordinator, must be provided to support your appeal.
