THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF A MODERN PASSENGER TRAIN SERVICE

A HISTORY OF DIESEL AND ELECTRIC PASSENGER TRAINS FROMSOUTHAMPTON

WITH SERVICE NUMBERSANNUALLY DURING A WEEK OF THE SUMMERPEAKS

History

Summary

  • BR moved Southampton’s passenger train services from the steam age to the diesel and electric age between 1957 and 1967. Faster and more frequent services then operated at regular intervals on the routes which became South West Trains. In the following 30 years it introduced incremental improvements on the routes which are now Cross Country and Great Western, with direct trains to a much wider range of destinations. In 1990, following electrification of the Southampton/Eastleigh-Portsmouth lines, it introduced new services to Victoria via Hove and Gatwick Airport, which were to become part of the South Central/Southern franchise. The main backward steps in the later years were the reduction of local services between Southampton and Portsmouth, and fragmentation of the Waterloo-Southampton-Bournemouth stopping services, which provided direct and connectional journeysbetween many individual stations.
  • The South West Trains franchise started with trains cancelled to increase profits through staff reduction. No effort is made to maintain connections on which numerous passengers rely, and in many cases there is no correlation between service levels and demand. The fastest servicestoLondon are 12 minutes slower than BR’s best (14 minutes slower on Sundays). The Waterloo-Southampton-Bournemouth stopping services now take 183 minutes, with 17 intermediate stops; forty years ago they took 175 minutes with 26 stops. Carriages which provided through workings between Southampton and the West of England now run between Waterloo and Bristol, extracting custom from First Great Western;the journey from Southampton to Exeter takes about 30 minutes longer than BR’s best.
  • Virgin Cross Country increased services via Birmingham to hourly, but created overcrowding with new Voyager trains comprising only 4/5-coaches. In addition DfT prescribed that services should be concentrated on Manchester. Following transfer of the franchise to Cross Country, thesebackward steps have to some extent been addressed through a further-expanded timetable.
  • The Connex South Central franchise was characterized by stagnation and neglect. Govia’s Southern has since introduced regular daily services to Brighton, finally removing the need to change at Fratton forSussex destinations. The Victoria service has been re-routed to serve Horsham and Crawley, with a small reduction in journey time.
  • National Express’ Wales and West franchise saw direct services extended to a wider range of destinations. These improvements were expunged by DfT in franchise re-shaping, but First Great Western has introduced a new tranche of services to Gloucestershire and Worcestershire.
  • To summarize, Southampton now has the highest level of departures ever, but not the best range of services. SWT has been a stolid franchise, with services gradually becoming slower and more disjointed. The Wales & West/FGW franchises originally built on BR’s policy of providing direct services to a wider range of destinations, but this was reversed by DfT. The Cross Country and Southern franchises are providing best-ever service levels under the current operators.

BR FROM STEAM TO DIESELANDELECTRIC OPERATION

1952

  • Trials started withprototype diesel locomotives on the Waterloo-Weymouth main line.

1957

  • Frequent ‘Hampshire Diesel’services introduced from 16 September, including to Salisbury.

1962

  • Hampshire Diesel network expanded, including to Reading.
  • Weekday Southampton Docks/Eastleigh-Waterloo-BournemouthWest-Eastleigh schedule using diesel locomotive from Southern Region’s new fleet.

1963

  • Diesel haulage extended, principally at summer weekends, as steam locomotives withdrawn.

1964

  • Andoverservice ended under the Beeching cuts.

1965

  • Diesel trains introduced onPortsmouth-Cardiffroute, with improved service, as part of BR’s

Western Regionmodernisation programme.

1966

  • Southampton Terminus station closed from5 September.

1967

  • Steam haulage ended on 9 July, and timetablerestructured from 10 July, with the same basic

mainline service sevendays a week.

  • Third rail electric trains took over the Waterloo-Bournemouth/Lymington route with a 70-minute fast timing between Waterloo and Southamptonevery two hours; diesel traction used between Bournemouth and Weymouth.
  • Development of cross-country services started with a basic weekday service of three trains to or via Birmingham spread across the day.

BR DIESEL AND ELECTRIC SERVICE DEVELOPMENT

1969

  • Direct Swanage services endedin anticipation of branch closure underthe Beeching cuts.

1972

  • Alton service ended under the Beeching cuts.
  • Further development of cross-country services linked the ports of Southampton and Liverpoolseven days a week, with the summer Saturday Sheffield service experimentally diverted via Luton for two years to serve airport passengers.

1973

  • With BR’s Western Region increasingly using its stock on internal services, the Portsmouth- Salisbury semi-fast service extended to Bristol every two hours on weekdays, replacing the Cardiff trains. All Portsmouth services extendedto the Harbour station.

1974

  • Waterloofast services increased to hourly, with extra trains constructed.

1977

  • Sunday service cuts ended thebasic seven-day service, which was never restored, and temporarily broughtthe first everdirect hourly service toLymington.

1979

  • Local diesel train service expandedwhenBristolextensions ended by restoration of the Cardiff trains.

1983

  • Portsmouthsemi-fast trains ‘suspended’ for Southampton tunnel works but never restored.

1984

  • Further development of cross-country services brought first direct trains to Scotland.

1988

  • New fleetof quality inter-city ‘Wessex Electric’ trains, which gained the world speed record for third

rail stock, introduced on Waterloo services. New timetable from 16 May; Southampton 67 minutes from Waterloo in both directions onweekdays, with one intermediate stop at SouthamptonAirport in 59 minutes. Sunday services stoppedadditionally at Basingstoke and were only marginally slower.

  • Electric operation extended from Bournemouth to Weymouth, bringing the end of Channel Islands Boat Trains to Weymouth Quay, which was reached via a street tramway.
  • Further improved Portsmouth-Cardiff service, using newSprinter diesel trains.
  • Sleeper train between Edinburgh and Poole introduced, lasting until 1992.
  • Waterloo-Bournemouth stopping service replaced by Waterloo-Southampton andSouthampton-Wareham services.

1990

  • Electrification to Portsmouth brought a new direct service to Victoria via Hove and Gatwick Airport

(operatedas an extension of the PortsmouthHarbour stopping service on Sundays). On weekdays Portsmouth-Southampton and Southampton-Wareham service rolled together.

1991

  • The renaissance of BR’sregional routes, based partly on the popularityof direct services, brought

a Carmarthen train as the first increment of a significant range of new direct services to

South West Wales.

1993

  • New diesel trainson the Waterloo/South Coast-Exeter route. Sunday afternoon train from Southampton reachedExeterCentral in a record 122minute timing (reduced to just 2 hours in 1994).

1994

  • Franchise shaping started, with the weekday Southampton-Victoriaservice extended to Bournemouth and the Sunday service split into separate trainseast and west of Portsmouth.
  • Mainline services rearranged to fit into a ‘shuttle’ between Waterloo and Southampton, with three trains an

hour departing at 20-minute intervals, but all arriving at the opposite end in a space of 25 minutes.

CROSS COUNTRY TRAINS [VIRGIN CROSS COUNTRY UNTIL NOVEMBER 2007]

2002

  • Virgin increased services to hourly from September under ‘Operation Princess’, but failed to resolve capacity problem because it ran shorter trains.

2007

  • Scotland services via Preston and Carlisle re-routed via Newcastle, adding around one hour to journey times. This was prescribed by DfT to protect revenue on Virgin Trains’ West Coast services.

2008

  • Services concentrated on Manchester from December because of further franchise re-shaping by DfT.

2010

  • Cross Country introduced a two-hourly weekday service between Southampton and Newcastle/Edinburgh from December.

FIRST GREAT WESTERN [WALES WEST UNTIL OCTOBER 2001]

1997

  • National Express revived BR’s programme of improvements to regional routes. Wales and West’s brief life saw phased introduction of direct trains to Penzance, Swindon, Barry Island, and Liverpool via Newport, Hereford and Shrewsbury.

2001

  • With the Wales & Borders franchise focused on turning Welsh routes into a joined-up network, all services from Southampton to South Wales terminated at Cardiff from September.

2007

  • Some Cardiff services re-routed to Gloucestershire and Worcestershire from May, as part of an improved cross-Bristol timetable.

SOUTHERN TRAINS [CONNEX SOUTH CENTRAL UNTIL AUGUST 2001]

2003

  • Extension of the Victoriaservice to Bournemouth ended from May in a further SRA initiative to improve SWT’s unacceptable performance.

2004

  • Most Victoria services temporarily diverted to Littlehampton while new rolling stock concentrated on London-SussexCoast services.

2007

  • Southern’s December timetable saw Victoria trains re-routed via Horsham and Crawley, and introduced hourly weekday trains to Brighton.

2010

  • Southern extended Brighton trains to Sundays from December, finally ending the need to

change at Fratton on journeys between Southampton and the SussexCoast.

SOUTH WEST TRAINS

1997

  • First effects of franchising. Services became notional, when Stagecoach boostedprofits by disposing of too many drivers and cancelling trains, initially on an ad hoc basis.

1999

  • Mainline service frequency increased, with long layover times at Southamptonand many more trains

formed of old rolling stock (which had proved so fragile in the Clapham Disaster of 1988), blocking

AngliaTrains’ proposals for direct Southampton-Norwich services.

2001

  • The Strategic Rail Authority imposed cuts to help improve SWT’s unacceptable performance.

2003

  • HampshireCounty Council’s aspirations realized, from May, in a new Totton-Romsey service, calling at

a reconstructed Chandlers Ford station. Mainline service reducedfrom September in further SRA initiative to improve SWT’s performance.

2007

  • SWT introduced a new mainline timetable from December which varied significantly from the franchise specification. Improved services to minor rural stations such as Dean, Mottisfont & Dunbridge, and Holton Heath more than offset by less frequent, worse-spaced, or slower services to much busier stations serving substantial urban areas such as Totton, New Milton and Christchurch.
  • Final direct service to the West, after more than half a century, owing to SWT’s incremental switch of through carriages to its Waterloo-Bristol service.
  • Mainline services downgraded as SWT replaced the 1988 rolling stock with cheap Desiro trains, built by Siemens when facing severe financial problems; many Waterloo services formed of outer-suburban stock.
