Fall 2016 SAS and LAW Electives
3/23/16; rev. 8/8/16
Lauder will register you (not Wharton or SAS) for all electives except LAW and PUBH. Please e-mail Dr. Kenric Tsethlikai () and Selma Pastor ().
Please note: Courses that are most appropriate for the MA degree will be those numbered 400-600. If a course lists recitation sections (REC), you must be registered for BOTH the lecture and one of these.
Courses with numbers lower than 400 may sometimes serve as the basis for graduate work by permission of both the instructor and the department (after receiving approval from the Lauder Managing Director and Co-Director) and registration by the department for a higher-number section. Doing this requires some work on your part. This process can be time-consuming, so please start early.
Course credits may vary. Please note that 2 SH (for Law courses) equal .67 CU. So choose carefully to be sure you don’t find yourself short on the credits you need for graduation.
700- or 800-level courses may be intended for Ph.D. candidates in the field. Although a few may be included in this list, you should check before planning to take any courses at these levels.
This is NOT a comprehensive list of courses offered. For a full list, visit the Penn Registrar’s website: and/or go directly to individual SAS departmental home pages and follow links to available courses. You may find a convenient list of all SAS departments and links to departmental home pages here: Be sure to check thesesites more than once, as courses may be cancelled or meeting times changed for a variety of reasons.
Courses not on this list must be approved by the Lauder Co-Director, Dr. Frederick Dickinson (), or the Lauder Managing Director, Dr. Kenric Tsethlikai. Remember that these courses must make sense in the context of an International Studies degree: international, global, or comparative content AND a social-science or humanities perspective. Courses that are inherently experiential or applied are not appropriate. In particular, courses offered by the Fels Center (GAFL), the Organizational Dynamics Department (DYNM), and the School of Social Policy and Practice (NPLD) are rarely appropriate. Those courses may be taken using Wharton credits after satisfying the 19-credit minimum for the MBA degree.
Nota bene:
Students who, for any reason, would like to consider further options may petition for any course numbered 400 or above in any of the following departments: History (HIST), History and Sociology of Science (HSOC), Philosophy (PHIL), Political Science (PSCI), Sociology (SOCI, or Urban Studies (URBS)
OR
any non-language-instruction course numbered 400 or above in Chinese (CHIN), East Asian Languages and Civilizations (EALC), French (FREN), Germanic Languages (GRMN), Italian (ITAL), Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations (NELC), Romance Languages (ROML), Russian (RUSS), South Asian Studies (SAST), or Spanish (SPAN).
Petitions (an explanation of the rationale for the course with a copy of the syllabus) must be sent to the Managing Director and the Co-Directorprior to the end of the advance registration period (no later than April 3, 2016).
PLEASE NOTE: One of the two SAS electives for the Class of 2017 only must be a regular semester-long SAS course. The other may be a course ranging from an Independent Study to Global Program courses (taken as electives) and other approved INTS courses. All courses must be taken for a grade.
