Course Description:
Reading Enrichment is designed to engage students in explicit, systematic instruction in comprehension, vocabulary, fluency and writing. Students will participate in the Journeys program. Students will be assigned a textbook and workbook. Students will be required to bring the textbook to class every day. The workbooks may be kept in the classroom. Additionally, students will work online on SOLO (Strategic Online Learning Opportunities) approximately once a week.

Grading:
Grading is based on an objective point system: class participation, class assignments, homework, assessments, and progress on SOLO (online computer program). The Woodland Hills School District’s grading scale will be used.

Participation: Students’ participation grade will be based on following the 5 Ps in class.

·  Prompt (in assigned seat working on warm-up when the late bell rings)

·  Prepared (with a pencil/pen)

·  Productive (actively participate in class)

·  Polite (listen to others, speak respectfully and respect others’ personal space)

·  Proud (do your best work)

In-class Assignments: Workbooks will be checked regularly throughout the grading period. I expect all students to make an honest attempt on their assignments. When students are absent, they are expected to make up the missing work.

Homework: The students’ homework is to read independently for at least 20 minutes twice per week. Students must submit TWO Independent Reading Logs each week. The assignments are due on the last school day of the week. If there are 3 or fewer school days in a week, students are only required to submit ONE Independent Reading Log. Paper copies of the Independent Reading Logs are available in the classroom and are also available online at http://www.whsd.net/userfiles/1518/Classes/74377/Independent%20Reading%20Assignment.pdf Students may submit their Independent Reading Logs electronically at http://www.whsd.net/olc/page.aspx?id=74378&s=1518

*Additional homework may also be assigned.

Assessments: There will be a Comprehension and Vocabulary Assessment at the end of each unit. Sufficient notice will be given to the student prior to the assessment.

SOLO (Strategic Online Learning Opportunities): SOLO is an online program that provides additional practice and application of key comprehension skills. Students will use the software approximately once a week and will be graded on their participation and progress. It can be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection at http://solo.voyagerlearning.com/ For additional vocabulary practice, students can go to http://www.vocabjourney.com/

Edline: Progress reports will be issued at the midpoint of the grading period. Students can view their grade on www.edline.net at any point during the grading period. If you ever have any questions about your grade, ask Ms. Rutkowski.

Classroom Procedures: When you come into class, begin working on the “Do Now” and on Friday have the homework on your desk. Stay on task throughout the lesson or activity and always do your best. At the end of the period, do not line up by the door. Remain in your seat until the teacher dismisses you and please remember to push in your chairs.

Classroom Expectations

Prompt Productive

- I am in the classroom when the bell rings. - I participate actively in class.

- I turn in my work on time. - I work with my team members in group assignments.

Prepared - I complete my class assignments.

- I bring my materials to class.

- I do my homework assignments.

- I dress appropriately. Proud

- I take pride in myself, my work, and my school.

Polite

- I raise my hand before I speak.

- I listen and speak respectfully to staff members and classmates.

- I respect others’ personal space.

Discipline for failing to comply with the classroom expectations will result in the following:

1.)  A warning, and loss of the day’s class participation points.

2.)  Moving your seat, a phone call home, and loss of the day’s class participation points.

3.)  A referral to the office, and loss of the day’s class participation points.

Missed exams, quizzes, and/or other assignments: Good attendance is necessary to do well in class, as most information will be given during the class periods. Therefore, poor attendance generally leads to poor grades.

If a student is absent from class for any reason, he/she will have the same number of days he/she was absent to complete any missed assignment(s), including homework, projects, and tests, upon returning back to school. Graded assignments that are not made up in a timely fashion will be given a score of zero.

Being Excused from Class: If necessary, students will be excused to use the restroom but not during the first or last ten minutes of class. Students must take the wooden hall pass, sign out on the clipboard and sign in upon return. Please keep in mind that if students are not in class, they cannot be learning. So please do not ask to use the restroom every day.
