Explanatory notes

1Definitions

Vagahau Niue refers to the language of Niue. This unit standard involves spoken Vagahau Niue;

Context refers to communicative situations, topics and settings that are appropriate to spoken Vagahau Niue;

Less familiar refers to topics and settings that may be outside the learner’s normal personal experience;

Exchange means to convey and seek;

Points of view could include advice;

Transaction refers to conversation conveying or seeking information to achieve an outcome such as organising accommodation, solving travel problems, or arranging part-time work. The conversation may be face to face or via the telephone.

2Evidence is required from one extended conversation and one transaction, each with a minimum involvement of three minutes. For the purposes of this unit standard these may be real situations or role plays.

3Language used must be in Vagahau Niue may be spoken with village-based dialectal differences and intonation.

4Endorsement of village language variation may be conducted by pulotu, village or community appointed experts.

5Achievement of the evidence requirements allows for hesitation, or minor errors in grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and intonation.
