Course Description:

Students in this class need little or no sewing experience, but a lot of enthusiasm. They will learn basic sewing skills. Teacher will assist the student in the selection of appropriate projects for their skill level. There will be two projects per semester. Student must supply all materials by written due dates.

Course Objectives:

Students will learn and practice skills in basic sewing construction. They will also gain experience and confidence in creative clothing and accessory selection. In addition, students will have the opportunity to explore the application of these skills to interior design and leisure activities.

Student Competencies: Students will

1. thread the sewing machine and bobbin successfully.

2. demonstrate knowledge and skill in use of sewing machine.

3. demonstrate knowledge of sewing tools available to simplify tasks.

4. gain knowledge of fabrics: woven, knit, and non-woven suitability for pattern/project.

5. demonstrate ability to read pattern envelope for the following purchasing information:

yardage requirements, notions, suitable fabric, size and view information.

6. demonstrate understanding of pattern layout and fabric cutting.

7. demonstrate methods of transferring pattern markings to fabric.

8. demonstrate ability to follow a sequence of pictorial steps on a guide sheet.

9. assess personal line and design and wardrobe building.

Class Assignments:

1. Sewing machine parts and operation review.

2. Line and design and body measurement to determine style and pattern size.

3. Study guides on fibers and fabric.

4. Skill drills; examples: sewing a dart, button, button hole,

5. At least Two sewing projects per semester; teacher approved based on skill level.

6. Notebook: class assignments, handouts and project evaluations.

7. Written “fashion story” and participation in fashion show.

Class Policies and Behavioral Expectations:

Participation—Student will:

1. have project supplies by posted due dates.

2.respect equipment and the equipment & supplies of others.

3. be respectful and responsible in language and actions for teacher and class

members at all times; a reflection of valuing healthy family relationships.

5. follow classroom procedures (listed below).

6. stay on task; selecting and completing appropriate projects by posted due dates;

6. demonstrate integrity by making the most of this opportunity.

7. initiate problem solving skills; projects are skill level selected.

Classroom Procedures—Students will:

1. keep cell phones and all other equipment appropriately put away. School guidelines

followed.

2. handle personal needs before class; tardy policy adhered to.

3. be responsible for doing assigned tasks daily to keep classroom organized.

4. remain in assigned area until dismissal.

5. make-up assignments due to absence:

written work—1 week; projects—by end of each cardmarking

Consequences—Students will:

1. be given verbal warning and have conference with teacher

2. be given detention and parents will be called if inappropriate behavior persists .

3. be given referral for misuse of equipment.

Supplies:

Project supplies are the responsibility of the student. They should be purchased and in class by posted due dates (see attached). Please email or call me with questions or concerns.

This class is primarily self-paced; time management is extremely important. A project shopping list will be given. The following are due dates for needed supplies:

We enjoy celebrating our accomplishments. You are cordially invited to attend the fashion show “SHS Project Runway” (date to be announced).

This class will be an enjoyable experience for your student. Sewing is a life skill with practical application, providing opportunities to enhance creativity. Students are encouraged to develop their own personal fashion style by using the sewing skills and design basics we will learn about during this course.
