Materials Needed for This Lesson

-images of animals (Grade6-Unit3.Lesson16-PP1)

-Handout: Cazar para el tesoro (Grade6-Unit3.Lesson18-Handout1)—one per student

Lesson Steps

Warm-up: TPR review of vocabulary.

Activity 1: Practice the following Q & A with the students:

Teacher: ¿Tú tienes una mascota?

Student: Sí tengo una mascota. /

No, no tengo una mascota.

Teacher: ¿Qué es?

Student: Es un/a _____.

Teacher: ¿Cómo es?

Student: Es…

Activity 2: Tell students to turn to their right and practice the Q & A. Have students turn to their left and repeat this activity. Encourage the students to use as much Spanish as they can, e.g. descriptive words and more complex sentences if they are able.

Activity 3: Treasure Hunt. Students will need the handout titled Cazar para el Tesoro (Grade6-Unit3.Lesson18-Handout1). Review the information on the sheet with the students. Make sure to tell the students that as you go over the sheet they are not to say anything but that they should be thinking if they fit the description. Explain to the students that they have 13 minutes to walk around the room and ask their fellow students if they have pets that fit the descriptions. If yes, that person should write his or her name in the square. The first student to complete the sheet returns to the teacher. The teacher stops all activity, verifies the information, and awards the student with a small token (sticker, pencil, etc).

Closure: Tell students to return to their seats. Review the handout with a Q & A of the information gathered by the students.

Notes to the Teacher

During the closure activity encourage students to be the ones to ask questions or volunteer information that they discovered through their search. Encourage them to use as much Spanish as they can, e.g. descriptions, complex sentences, etc. Once again, using the point system, you can award the class points for each question or answer that is volunteered. Final reward: if the students score 10 points they choose the final activity.
