THE 2014 JUSTICE BROTHERS-SHAV GLICK AWARD NOMINEES ANNOUNCED
Duarte, CA: After careful deliberation, the annual Justice Brothers-Shav Glick award nominees have been selected. Shav Glick, who passed away in 2007, was a well-respected motorsports writer for the Los Angeles Times, and a member of the Motorsports Hall Of Fame. The Justice Brothers-Shav Glick Award recognizes motorsports personalities who have made valuable or distinguished contributions to the various types of motorsports in California. Ed Justice, Jr., President and CEO of Justice Brothers will present the award during the pre-race ceremonies at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Auto Club 400 race in Fontana, CA on Sunday March 23. The nominees for 2014 are:
WALKER EVANS- Walker Evans is one of the most significant off-road racers of all time, earning him the nickname “The Legend”. During his 20-year racing career he amassed 142 overall wins and 21 championship titles. Among those victories were five Baja 1000 races, and taking the checkered flag at the Mint 400, Parker 400, and the Fireworks 250. Evans drove off-road prepared race trucks by Bill Stroppe, and also owned and raced a NASCAR Craftsman truck. He was inducted into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall Of Fame in 2004.
ROBBY GORDON- Robby Gordon is a multi-platform competitor. He has raced in NASCAR, CART, IndyCar, Trans-Am, IMSA, IROC and the Dakar Rally. He has won five consecutive SCORE International off-road class championships, is a three time Baja 1000 and a four-time Baja 500 winner. In 2013 he started the stadium truck racing series. Additional accomplishments include two CART wins, three NASCAR Sprint Cup wins, four consecutive wins in the 24 Hours Of Daytona and three consecutive 12 Hours of Sebring wins.
STEVE SALEEN- Steve began racing in Formula Atlantic competition, eventually moving up to the SCCA Trans-Am series and SCCA World Challenge, driving a Mustang. Due to his passion for the Mustang, he formed Saleen Autosports in 1983. The company built performance Mustangs, one of which won the Mosport 24 Hour race that year. Eventually, after leaving Saleen Autosports, he formed SMS Supercars in 2008, again producing high-end performance cars, and is currently still involved with SMS. He was inducted into the Mustang Hall Of Fame in 1996.
BILL SIMPSON- Bill started drag racing, USAC Championship Car and SCCA racing in the Sixties. He competed in the 1968-’74 and ’76-’77 seasons with 53 career starts. He also raced the Indianapolis 500 and retired from racing in 1977. In 1958 he had broken both arms in a drag racing accident and became interested in racing safety equipment. As a result he pioneered the first parachute or “Drag Chute” for race cars, and “Big Daddy” Garlits was the first to utilize this method of slowing down a dragster. Simpson used Nomex material to create the first fire suit for racers, which was then after utilized in all forms of motorsports competition. He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall Of Fame in 2003.
