Maintenance Journeyman Electrician

Definition

Under general supervision, performs skilled work as a journeyman craftsman in the maintenance, construction, inspection, and repair of district buildings, equipment and grounds.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions in this classification are distinguished from other maintenance classifications, in that the majority of assignments require the performance of journeyman-level skills in one of the trade fields such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC, or painting. Supervision of helpers may be a regular or occasional responsibility.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience

  • As specified under “Qualifications.” Temperature and equipment control adjustment and solid-state control adjustment and repair experience is a very desirable qualification for the position.

Qualifications

  • Must have been a licensedjourneyman for a minimum of four (4) years.

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the electrical trade.
  • Applicable codes.
  • Estimating time and supply needs for specific jobs.

Ability to:

  • Perform skilled repair and maintenance work in the electrical trade.
  • Perform preventive maintenance duties.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work effectively without close supervision.
  • Retain license from State of Oregon appropriate to the position for which applied.

Licenses:

  • Possess an appropriate valid Oregon driver’s license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Possess a current Oregon State Journeyman Electrical License, unrestricted.

Special Requirements

  • No beards or facial hair that will prevent the seal of type “C” respirator.
  • Employees must have facial features capable of fitting a type “C” respirator.
  • Employees must submit to and pass a pulmonary function test, a “B” read chest x-ray, cardiovascular fitness test and fill out a questionnaire on medical history and past work history dealing with asbestos.
  • Employee must be a non-smoker and sign a non-smoking agreement.
  • Employee must agree to periodic training schools dealing with asbestos control.
  • Employee must be able to lift 75 pounds.

Performance Responsibilities

Electrician – Under the Direct Supervision of a Licensed Supervisor:

Plans, lays out, installs and repairs wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus and control equipment. Plans new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials.

Maintains consistency with specifications and state electrical codes.

Prepares sketches showing location of wiring and equipment or follows diagrams or blueprints prepared by others.

Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles and installs electrical conduit.

Connects wiring to light fixtures and power equipment.

Installs control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, circuit-breakers, HVAC and motor control panels.

Makes appropriate tests of circuits to insure electrical compatibility and safety of all components using standard instruments, such as VOM, Megger and oscilloscope.

Observes functioning of installed equipment or system to detect hazards and need for adjustment, relocation or replacement.

Repairs faulty equipment or systems and performs such other duties as may be assigned if within the usual scope of this employment.
