Dr. Detlef Wiswe

Vice President Corporate Environmental Protection, Occupational Safety and Security

Beiersdorf AG

Detlef Wiswe is responsible for the design and implementation of the Corporate Management System for Environmental Protection, Occupational Safety and Security. This includes the development of strategies, policies and standards for the BDF Group and also activities in the area sustainability and its reporting.

Locally in Hamburg, he ensures that legal requirements are met in regard to immission control, occupational safety and health, water pollution, waste management and dangerous goods transportation.

Detlef Wiswe joined Beiersdorf in 1985 starting in tesa´s R & D. He was responsible for the development of self adhesive tapes for the automotive and electric industry and fabric based tapes for general purpose. Since then he had different positions.

Detlef Wiswe received his M.S. in Chemistry and PhD at the University of Hamburg. His academic research includes preparation and investigation of liquid crystalline copolymers with synchrotron radiation and neutron beam scattering.


Mr. Timo Mäkelä

Director, Sustainable Development & Integration Unit

Timo Mäkelä is Director – Sustainable Development and Integration – at the DG Environment of the European Commission. His present responsibilities include sustainable development and economic analysis, sustainable production and consumption - including waste management, research, science and innovation policies as well as environmental policies for the industry.

After the completion of a Master of Technological Sciences degree at the Helsinki University of Technology, Mr Mäkelä has received a Post-graduate Diploma in Sanitary Engineering from IHE in the Netherlands.

Mr Mäkelä has held a number of posts at the Ministry of Environment of Finland. Furthermore, he has also served as a head of department at the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Water Affairs in Gaborone, Botswana. Mr Mäkelä’s other assignments have included, among others, a three-year posting at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London as Director of Municipal and Environmental Infrastructure Team and as Senior Banker.

Since 1996, Mr Mäkelä has been employed by the European Commission, as a Head of Unit at the Enlargement Unit of DG Environment in Brussels and as the Head of European Commission Representation in Finland.


Mr. Fritz Balkau

Fritz Balkau is Head of UNEP’s Production and Consumption Branch in the Division of Technology, Industry and Economics.

Dr. Balkau graduated as a research chemist from Monash University in Australia in 1973. After 3 years teaching at Victoria University, he worked for the Environment Protection Authority in various functions concerned with environmental planning, waste and pollution management, chemicals and environmental policy. He spent one year with the Chemicals Division of OECD before joining UNEP's Industry and Environment Office in Paris in 1987.

The Production and Consumption Branch of UNEP promotes and facilitates the worldwide implementation of cleaner and safer production approaches and more sustainable patterns of consumption in civil society and industry. The Branch has an active programme of information exchange, capacity building and training to help governments and industry to adopt more systematic approaches to environmental management.

Dr. Wolfgang Schacht

Born 1956 in Hamburg, Dr. Wolfgang Schacht holds a degree in chemistry from the University of Hamburg.

He joined tesa’s R&D in 1987, at that time an integral part of Beiersdorf AG.

Initially responsible for development of double-sided tapes, he focused then on product development and raw materials.

Since 2001 when tesa AG became a wholly owned affiliate of the BDF Group in 2001, Dr. Schacht is responsible for the construction and implementation of an integrated Management System for Quality Managment, Environmental Protection and Occupational Safety on a corporate level.


Mr. Ludwig Metz

Ludwig Metz is Associate Director in the Corporate Environmental Health and Safety Department and responsible for European Issues.

He joined Bristol-Myers Squibb in 1988 as a Manager providing EHS Services for a fine chemicals, pharmaceutical finishing plant, toxicology, product development and basic research.

Prior to Bristol-Myers Squibb he worked for Siemens AG and the Steel Industry.

At present, Ludwig serves the BMS European businesses in all EHS needs, such as Compliance Programs, Regulation Tracking, Advanced Packaging Development for Pharmaceuticals or training business people in all Sustainable Matters. He also develops EHS Marketing Concepts and Strategies to integrate EHS into overall business. He is the initiator and co-author of three booklets with the titles Handling of Cytostatic Pharmaceuticals, which is available in more than 20 countries worldwide, Environmental Management in Hospitals and finally he is one of the initiators of the BMS Greener hospital initiative and received therefore the BMS Presidents Award.

Ludwig is

1987 – 1990 Responsible for the Belgian Information Center Dangerous Goods

Founded as an Emergency Response Center supporting the Belgian Public Services ( fire brigades, police, civil protection, etc) engaged with fighting incidents involving hazardous chemicals, the center expanded its services to also cooperate closely with the EU and with the Dutch (VEW, BIZA), German (BMU), Swedish ( Raddningsverket) and Swiss (NAZ) authorities involved in industrial and environmental care as well as with numerous industrial customers to which SDS, Workplace Instruction Cards, TremCards,… are provided.

1990 – 1999 Manager Environment, Safety and Regulatory Affairs, Betz Europe Inc.

Betz Inc. headquartered in Trevose, PA provides specialty chemicals and services for water and industrial process treatment. Marc Van Meldert was based at Betz’ European headquarters located near Brussels and lead the European Safety, Health, Environment and Regulatory Affairs team.

Dr. Dieter Hiller

Environmental Advisor

As Schlumberger’s Environmental Advisor, Dieter Hiller is responsible for environmental programs of the Group. This comprises the development, implementation, verification and review of policies, standards and procedures, in cooperation with environmental managers and champions at various levels within the organization. His prior assignments in Schlumberger were as Environmental Manager for Eastern Hemisphere operations, and coordinator of global technical support in environmental matters.

Prior to joining Schlumberger in 1997, Mr. Hiller was in charge of international business and President of European subsidiaries for the environmental consulting firm, HPC Harress Pickel Consult AG, based in Germany. His previous assignments with HPC included the set-up of a presence in the United States.

Dieter Hiller is a graduate with an MS in Geology and holds a Dr. rer. nat. (Geophysics) from the University of Stuttgart, Germany.
