Lesson Plan
Learning Objective:
I can catch a ball that was thrown.
I can overhand throw a ball using at least two cues. / Lesson Notes/Materials:
bowling pins
yarn balls
SOL:
2.1 The student will demonstrate approaching (at least two critical elements) and mature form (all correct critical elements) of locomotor, non-locomotor, and manipulative skills.
a) Demonstrate individually and with a partner the mature forms of manipulative skills for underhand throwing, catching underhand tossed or thrown ball, kicking/passing stationary ball to a partner or to a target, foot dribble with control while walking, striking, consecutive upward volleying with hand(s), and stationary hand dribbling.
h) Demonstrate approaching mature form (at least two critical elements) for overhand throw, dribbling with dominant/preferred hand while walking, kicking moving ball, striking ball/object with short-handled implement upward and forward, striking/batting ball off tee, and jumping backward with self-turn rope.
Link to Background Knowledge
Today we will be doing an activity reinforcing the skills we learned in a previous lesson – throwing and catching a ball as well as teamwork. Can anyone think of another activity where we used throwing? What were the cues? Throwing Cues: side to target, point to target, bow and arrow, step with opposition, buckle seatbelt. What other activities do we use catching? What were the cues? Catching Cues: bear hands, eyes on ball, soft hands/grab.
Engage and Explain
Explain Meteorite: Class is divided into two teams (one on each side of the basketball court). The object of the game is to knock down all the opponent’s bowling pins by throwing yard balls from your team’s side. There are two ways to knock down bowling pins – 1. Throw a yarn ball from your team’s side and knock down pin. 2. Throw a yarn ball from your team’s side into opponent’s basketball hoop. If the ball goes in the hoop, student raises hand, runs to opponent’s side, and knocks down two pins. Additionally, there is a way to set up pins on your side. If a player catches a ball thrown by an opponent, he/she may set up one pin on his/her side – if any are down. If all pins are up, the player does nothing.
Without a ball, have students demonstrate correct technique for throwing and catching a ball. Demonstrate how to throw a ball into basketball hoop and jog over to knock down two pins.
Active Learning
Students play Meteorite. Encourage students to remain moving through duration of activity. Walk around providing feedback, assistance, and extensions where necessary.
What will you do for students who have early success?
Provide Extensions: Students throw while moving. Students catch with dominant/non-dominant hand. Students throw/catch with different size/weight ball/object. / What will you do for students who need additional support (special needs, EL, or more time/practice)?
Provide Modifications: Students throw closer to target. Students throw different type/weight of ball/object. Students catch different type/weight of ball/object (tossed by peer/teacher, etc.).
Reflect:
Compare the use of throwing and catching skills used in Meteorite to those used in throwing and catching a football. Outside of schools, where have you seen these skills used? In the community? On television? / Assessment: (see below)
Rubric posted in the play space. Encourage students to periodically self-assess to determine present level of performance. Walk around providing feedback & partnering students with one another to provide feedback and guidance.
Next Steps:
During closure, discuss other activities where the skills throwing and catching are needed to be successful. In upcoming units we will enhance your skills of throwing and catching.

Catching Rubric:

4 / 3 / 2 / 1
Catching / catch item while moving most of the time using correct cues for the basket catch and/or bear catch / catch item while stationary most of the time using correct cues for the basket catch and/or bear catch / does not catch item while stationary most of the time using correct cues for the basket catch and/or bear catch / does not use correct cues for basket catch and/or bear catch

Throwing Rubric:

4 / 3 / 2 / 1
Throwing / Demonstrates 3 or more correct cues for throwing / Demonstrates at least 2 correct cues for throwing / Demonstrates 1 correct cue for throwing / Does not demonstrate any correct cues for throwing
