All items below are subject to prior sale.

  1. Adam, V. [Victor] and A. D. S. [Alexis Eymery]. Les Enfants de la Mere Gigogne. Bruxelles: LIbrairie Belge Francaise. N.d., circa 1835. 12mo. 148 by 142 mm. 130 pp. 24 hand-colored plates, including frontis and title, which in this book amount to a double paged plate. We have found no copies of this particular Belgian edition but an 1835 edition issued in Paris has essentially the same characteristics, including the 24 color plates and page count and size. Regardless, an uncommon title in commerce. The plates are especially winsome, with several vignettes in each on a wide array of subject matter. The text is a collection of short stories and anecdotes. Moderate wear to the cover. Tight and clean within. Very Good. Full Calf. (#004470) $350.00
  1. Adventures of Benjamin F. Bear. New York: Lord & Taylor. N.d., circa early to mid-1940s. (Reference to Office of Price Administration, which existed between 1941 and 1947, and references to "Admiral Byrd Cloth", among other things, suggest the earlier part of this period.) 30 by 14 cm. Unpaginated, 24 pp. including wrap covers. Scarce, with no copies appearing on OCLC FirstServe. Loosely strung story about a cute cub who decides not to hibernate so that he can find out what autumn and winter are like in New York City, and all the fun he has as a result. On the rectos is narrated the story, while on the facing versos junior fashion items are illustrated and described, with the descriptions sometimes making allusion to the accompanying story. This was from a time when children in the city were dressed up in city clothes like miniature adults, and even play clothes, in which children could be children, had a certain flair that has largely vanished from our fashion scene. The illustration of both the children's fashion and the bear story are done in what can only be described as the breezy Lord & Taylor signature style, which was a perfect expression of the upscale department specialty store's image of comfortable elegance. At the time, this look was new, introduced by retail legend Dorothy Shaver, the first female president of a major retail chain. The story of the bear is not to be confused with a more recent, somewhat similar story with almost the same title. The story here may not be anyone's idea of sublime juvenile fiction -- it was probably written by a member of the store's marketing staff or its advertising agency -- but it does capture a moment in our culture very well indeed. Corner chips on the wraps. Darkening of the cover. Generally clean within. Very Good. Wraps. (#004272) $175.00
  1. Affetti a Dio. Milano: Dott. Vallardi. FIrst Edition. A beautiful wine red velvet binding with metal onlays, borders and clasp. Metal centerpiece of two birds drinking from a goblet. N.d., circa 1880. Miniature, 59 by 39 mm. 128 pp. Frontis and two other illustrated plates. Tailpiece vignette. Welsh 70. Tiny bookplate on prelim blank. Tiny tear to frontis lower corner. A few brownish stains. Light wear to cover. Near Fine. Velvet. (#004484) $650.00
  1. Aliquis. The Flight of The Old Woman Who Was Tossed Up in a Basket. Sketched & Etched by Aliquis. London: D. Bogue, 1844. A novel and fun panorama. 20 by 11 cm. 10 hand-colored panels, which open vertically, and stretches about two meters long as the old woman vanishes into outer space. An explanation of each of the plate panels in furnished on the back of the cover. The rear board contains a publisher's ad for "The Pictorial Hmpty Dumpty", a similar vertical panorama by Aliquis. The text, or key, on the rear front board was cut too tight on the right, with a few letters cut off, a defect at the time of issue. Soiling on the title board and scattered throughout the contents. A few tape repairs only apparent on the back of the panels or plates. Wear and minor joint tear to the cloth spine, which is on the top. Good Plus. Leporello. (#003269) $2,850
  1. Aliquis. Humpty Dumpty. London: Tilt & Bogue, 1843. A novel and fun panorama. Closed, oblong, 8.5 by 24 cm, and its seven panels within are stretchable to 157.5 cm, or about 1.5 meters. Unusual rendering of first four lines of nursery rhyme in five languages besides English --- French, Hebrew, Latin, Greek and German. Supposedly another edition of this, issued by the same publisher, also featured Italian, absent here, and perhaps the entirety of verse also in French. The whole verse runs as an upper caption for the panorama. Front board is foxed and soiled. The backs of four folds discreetly reinforced. Scattered light soiling to the panels, but overall bright and vivid. Very Good. Leporello. Card. Cloth spine.. (#003913) $3,500.00
  1. Alken, Henry. The Beauties and Defects in the Figure of the Horse. London: S. & J. Fuller, 1816. First Edition. 4to. 25 by 17 cm. 18 hand-colored equine plates, each with a page of accompanying text. Nineteenth century half red morocco by Morrell, marbled boards, gilt edges. Lovely gilt lettering and equine devices on spine. Armorial bookplate of Thomas Ashley Sparks. Light rubbing to joints. Minor finger soiling and a few stray light fox marks. Overall a very lovely copy. Near Fine. Half Morocco. (#004660) $1,250.00
  1. Alken, Henry. British Proverbs. London: E. & C. McLean, 1824. First Edition. Oblong 4to. 26 by 35 cm. Six hand-colored plates, each with four or five proverbs and then the ironic, sarcastic or absurdist burlesque pictorial illustration of the saying. As with a whole genre of Alken caricature books and folios, especially ones produced for McLean, the illustrations have a collage effect with plates at once offering one unified pictorial and four or five discreet ones, the number of the latter depending on the eye of the beholder. The hand-coloring throughout this copy is vivid and bright. And in our view, the marriage between the visual humor and the captions holds up better than generally the case with similar Alken titles. Expressions include "What your glass tells you you will not be told by counsel", "Happy is he who knows his follies in his youth", "They are poor hearts that never rejoice", and "Many speak much which cannot speak well", surely maxims to live by still, and other expressions that may now be a tad obscure or obsolete, such as "He giveth twice who gives in a trice." Uncommon Alken title, seldom in commerce. Beautifully bound in full calf by Riviere & Son. Two decorative bookplates on FEP. Decoratively stamped with a floral border and gilt turn-ins. Two prevous owners bookplates on FEP. Front hinge starting but sound. Joints and extremities with some rubbing. Slipcase has "Alken", title and date written in a gold watercolor and by a free hand on the long edge. Some light marginal finger soiling, and light foxing to blank prelim page, but overall clean and bright. Very Good. Full Calf. Cloth slipcase. . (#004730) $2,850.00
  1. Alken, Henry. Original Watercolours of Fox-Hunting Scenes. . Elephantine oblong folio, 38 by 54.5 cm. The paintings and prints measure 41 by 30 cm. The four paintings are entitled "Drawing the Cover", "Getting Away", "The Full Cry" and "The Death", and each is accompanied by the hand-colored engraving made from the painting. The engravings were made by R. G. Reeve for Thomas McLean and were issued in 1835. The original painting sits on the left, the engraving, on the right, and the latter is protected by a tissue guard attached from above. The paintings have a pale beauty, whereas the coloring of the engravings is more forceful and rich. Perhaps sacrificed ever so slightly, though, is the sharpness of detail in the engraved version. Regardless, a wonderful suite by one of the giants of equestrian and sporting art. The paintings and engravings are framed in a heavy, very substantial card matting that is virtually the same as what might be used if the pictures were framed on a wall. Very light, scattered soiling. Otherwise, fine. Fine. Half Calf. (#004258) $5,000.00
  1. Allerlei kleine Herrschaften. . N.d., circa 1920. Small folio. 33.5 by 25.5 cm. Unpaginated, 16 pp., half of which (8) are color plates depicting children in various activities. The style is a naive-flavored post-Impressionism -- big splotches of flat colors, a slightly dark palette of the Baltic region. Scarce title, with no copies located on OCLC FirstServe, and not listed in well-known bibliographies such as Wegehaupt or Klotz. Strangely no information in the book about the author, illustrator or publisher! Minor abrasions along edges and spine. Papers toned, but overall, remarkably well-preserved. Near Fine. Hardcover. Paper pastedown. Cloth spine. . (#004189) $725.00
  1. Almanach de Cabinet Année 1812 Age du Monde 5812. Paris: Chez Caillot, 1811. Unusual broadside almanac calendar, with vignettes for each month. Oblong, 19 by 47.5 cm, within frame, and with frame, 21.5 by 50 cm. The arrangement and style resembles closely the calendars featured in ladies' gift book almanacs of the same era that were issued by publishers such as Janet and Le Fuel. For each day is also given the saint associated with it, and the woodcut vignettes are just like the ones used in these exquisite, miniature and near miniature books. Qualifying the calendar as an almanac is the subsidiary information very compactly rendered, such as how much daylight is added or lost during a particular month. The almanac is printed on a heavy card, and its back is blank -- this was clearly intended to be used as a wall hanging or the like. The gilt frame is modest but suits the broadside well. With light soiling scattered throughout, not detracting from the broadside materially. A few words on the edge are faded but still legible, and a few letters on the same edge are rubbed out. Still, an interesting item, and we have never seen such a broadside almanac calendar before. Very Good. NA. (#004636) $425.00
  1. Alphabet en Figures. Paris: J. Langlumé et Peltier, 1835. First Edition. 12mo. 17.5 by 10.5 cm. 46 pp. 24 hand-colored plates, plus hand-colored title page. Scarce French ABC, with only copies found at Princeton, Indiana, and the BNF. (Not including digital versions.) Unusual Abecedaire as well, with entries one might not expect to presented to the young, such as "Odalisque" for "O", "Grec en guerre" for "G", or "Turk fumant" for "T", especially given the pietistic nature of some of the other entries such as "Pape" for "P" or "Confession" for "C". The religious tenor of the ABC is in keeping with the Restoration Period in France, when the Catholic Church was welcomed again into civic society. Other entries are more generic French patriotic fare, such as Napoleon and Henri IV. Le Men 274. With Romantic cartonnage paper pastedown cover. The paper pastedown is chipped along the joints, with considerable loss at the spine base, and with numerous small spots of rubbing on the boards, but with its floral Medieval Revival diaper, quite unusual and still handsome. Foxing, heavy-ish at times, on the text leaves, lighter and less frequent on the plates, which are of a heavier paper stock as well. Child's scrawl of particular letter on plate (the letter corresponding with the plate) in pencil is erasable, and mostly erased, but one can see a slight depression in the paper where the scrawl was. Good. Hardcover. Paper pastedown. (#004683) $1,200.00

The missing leaves are the general title, four prelim or prefatory leaves, three from Genesis: numbers 1, 4, 10, one from Exodus: 36, and the New Testament Title. Numerous closed tears, a few large, scattered through the bible, with only two woodcuts touched, but suffering no loss of imagery. These two are in Revelations, which was clearly thumbed through more frequently. Generally the woodcuts are unscathed, and the color remains vibrant. A few other leaves with marginal note losses, and a few instances of paper repair in the margins (but no facsimilization of margin text loss). One leaf, 193 (OT) with corner chunk loss. Dampstaining in bottom and inner margins of most pages. As with chipping and loss, the soiling is heaviest in the early leaves. The core is generally free of heavy blemishing. Calf, probably at least eighteenth century, heavily worn, dry and scuffed, and spine strip is gone. First and last half dozen leaves chipped and heavily worn along edges, with some loss of text. A few other leaves with marginal note losses, and a few instances of paper repair in the margins (but no facsimilization of margin text loss). Calf. (#003264) $27,500

Text section with scattered light to moderate foxing, as typical with the paper stock used. Some plates with a trivial amount of light foxing, but plates are generally bright and clean. Spine with repaired tear near upper extremity. Otherwise, the decorative cloth blindstamped and gilded binding is handsome and well-preserved. All edges gilt. A lovely copy overall. Very Good. Decorated Cloth. (#004415) $1,250.00
  1. Atkinson, J. A. [John Augustus Atkinson], illustrator and engraver. Sixteen Scenes taken from The Miseries of Human Life By one of THE Wretched. Based on the Reverend James Beresford’s “The Miseries of Human Life”, published in 1806 by Miller. (The same work inspired publisher Rudolph Ackermann and artist Thomas Rowlandson as wellWith original boards and printed label. Dampstain covering much of label and touching on the surrounding board paper pastedown, which has a moderate amount of other soiling too. The dampstain is heavy for small area of label, but none of the type is unreadable. Also a small finger-scrape hole of the label, again not affecting its content materially. A few light stains and finger smudges of the interior leaves, but overall these come off as crisp and clean. Very Good Minus. Hardcover. Paper pastedown. (#004432) $2,000.00
