BOARD OF EDUCATION OF HARFORD COUNTY

RECOGNITION

2009-10 HCPS NURSE OF THE YEAR

Debra J. King

November 22, 2010

Background Information:

For the past 19 years, the Harford School Health Services Association (HSHSA) has been honoring one Harford County Public School (HCPS) Nurse as Nurse of the Year. The Association chooses a school nurse who has demonstrated outstanding service to the school, the school system, and her profession. The prospective Nurse of the Year is nominated by one of her peers and her identity is revealed in a surprise announcement during the annual banquet held at the Bayou Restaurant in Havre de Grace. This year, the HSHSA held its banquet on May 6th.

Discussion:

Debra King, RN, BSN, was named the HCPS Nurse of the Year for 2009-10. Mrs. King has been a nurse for 23 years, and seven of those years have been spent as a school nurse in Harford County. Her list of accomplishments at HCPS is impressive. She is co-author of the nursing orientation manual and serves as an instructor for new nurses. She also coordinates the HCPS cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) program, teaches classes inside and outside the school setting, and she plays a key role in back-to-school professional development programs. In addition, Mrs. King has served on the HSHSA for three years and coaches the C. Milton Wright High School swim team. Mrs. King was selected as the 2009-10 Nurse of the Year because of her commitment to serving the students, staff and community of Harford Technical High School and always putting the safety and health of students first.

Superintendent’s Recommendation:

The Superintendent recommends the Board of Education of Harford County congratulate Debra King on having been named the 2009-10 HCPS Nurse of the Year, recognizing her outstanding accomplishments as a health professional, working with students and staff to maintain good health. The Superintendent also recommends the Board commend Nurse King for her efforts in advancing the mission of Harford Technical High School and the school nursing profession and extend its wishes for many more years of productive service in caring for the health needs of students and staff.
