StudentsmayapplytobeexemptedfromtherequirementtocompleteuptofourmodulesontheBachelorofArts(Hons)inEnglishandHistory,inordertoqualifyfortheawardofDegreeorDiploma.EachexemptionrequestisconsideredonitsownmeritsbytheExemptionsBoard.Thecriterionforexemptionfromstudyingaspecificmoduleisthatastudenthasengagedinpriorlearning,intheformofECTS(EuropeanCreditTransferSystem)credits,whichisequivalentinNFQ(NationalFrameworkofQualifications–
StudentswhowishtoseekexemptionsshouldfirstfamiliarisethemselveswiththestructureoftheBachelorofArts(Hons)inEnglishandHistory.TheBachelorofArts(Hons)inEnglishandHistorySyllabiareavailablefromthefollowingwebsite–
Pleasenotethatastudentmaynotseekan exemptionfromanBachelorofArts(Hons)inEnglishandHistorymodule,basedonECTScreditspreviouslyachieved,wherethoseECTScreditswereusedtoattainanotherlevel8(ontheNFQ)elsewhere.Forexample,astudentmaynotseekanexemptionforaHistorymoduleonthebasisthattheystudiedHistoryaspartofalevel8honoursdegreethattheywereawarded,asthosecreditswenttowardsthatpreviouslyattaineddegree.PleasealsonotethatastudentmaynotpresentthesameECTScreditsasqualificationformorethanoneDCUaward.
Theformshouldbecompletedifyouhaveengagedinpriorlearning,intheformofECTScreditsachievedatanappropriateNFQlevelthatcoveredthefullcontentofaBachelorofArts(Hons)inEnglishandHistorymodule(thisisaSpecificModuleExemption).Forexample,inordertobespecificallyexemptedfromtherequirementtocomplete,forexample,History2astudentmusthavesuccessfullycoveredthevastmajorityofcontentofHistory2inprioraccreditedstudies.
PriorlearningthatistobeusedasthebasisofanexemptionapplicationmustbeontheNFQ,forexamplepriorlearningachieved,intermsofECTScredits,onalevel8Honoursdegree,butwherethedegreewasnotcompleted.TheappropriateNFQlevelforthepreviouslyachievedlearningislevel8,asthe BachelorofArts(Hons)inEnglishandHistoryisalevel8HonoursDegreeprogramme.However,applicantswithsuitablequalificationsatlevel6orlevel7ontheNFQwillalsobeconsidered.ThenumberofECTScreditsachievedinpriorlearningmustbeatleastequivalenttothenumberofcreditsbeingsoughtaspartoftheexemptionapplication.Forexample,asallBachelorofArts(Hons)inEnglishandHistorymodulesare15ECTScredits,anapplicationforaHis1exemptionmustbeonthebasisofpriorlearningofatleast15ECTScreditsatlevel8(orequivalent).Ifthepriorlearningisatlevel6orlevel7morecreditsmaybeneededtocompensateforthedifferenceinNFQlevel.

OnlytheExemptionsBoardhastheauthoritytograntexemptions.Thegrantingofanexemptionwilldependontheexactnatureandcontentofanypreviouslearning,thelearningoutcomesachievedandthedateobtained.Givenhowquicklyknowledgeisevolving,theExemptionBoardwillpayparticularattentiontothecontentstudiedindatedawards.Inaddition,datedawardsmaygiverisetoquestionsastothe currencyoftheapplicant’sknowledge.(Pleasenotethat,atpresent,noexemptionsareawardedonthesolebasisofworkexperienceor‘in-house’training.)

Anapplicationwillnotbeconsideredwhereanyoftheaboveareexcludedfromtheapplication.Itistheresponsibilityoftheapplicanttosource,fromtheeducationalinstitutionwherethepriorlearningwasachieved,alltherequiredinformationanddocumentationandtoincludeitintheirapplication.
