Notes to Candidates for Research Fellowships

Clare Hall is a graduate College, founded in 1966, with about twenty each of Official Fellows and Research Fellows, fifteen Professorial Fellows, forty Visiting Fellows, and one hundred and forty Graduate Students. The President, Professorial Fellows, Official Fellows and Research Fellows comprise the Governing Body. Members and their families are welcome participants in the social life of the College, which is informal. There is limited accommodation for single persons and for families in the College, but the demand is too great for any assurance that a newly-elected Fellow will be able to live in immediately. All Fellows qualify for an allowance of free meals.

The College proposes to elect one stipendiary and two or more non-stipendiary Research Fellows in the Arts and Social Sciences, and two or more non-stipendiary Research Fellows in the Sciences. These Fellowships will be for a period of three years, tenable from 1 October 2008. The current stipend for a stipendiary Research Fellow is £15,300. There is also a living-out allowance of £3,000 p.a. Non-stipendiary Research Fellows will be expected to demonstrate that they have adequate financial support. Fellows are required to live in Cambridge during term, but leave may be granted to work away if necessary. Small grants for research expenses may be made available on application to the Bursar.

There are no restrictions on age, sex, or previous standing, except that those who have previously held stipendiary College Research fellowships in Oxford or Cambridge are not eligible, and some preference may be given to candidates who are at a fairly early stage of their research career.

The Application Form is intended as the cover sheet to your Research Proposal, which should not normally exceed one page. This proposal will be examined by experts in the field and by the Fellowship Committee. The final choice, however, will be made by the Governing Body, and the proposal should therefore be written so as to convey to the non-specialist something of the interest and importance of the topic. In addition, some candidates may be asked to submit written work for consideration. Short listed candidates will be called for interview.

The College will NOT solicit references. It is therefore YOUR responsibility to ask the referees named on the Application Form to send their references directly to the Chairman of the Fellowship Committee. References may be emailed or sent by post or by fax ().

The closing date for receipt of applications and references is:

Friday 26th October 2007

Please note that the receipt of applications or references will not be acknowledged, unless specifically requested.

College Interviews for candidates short-listed for fellowships in the Arts and Social Sciences will be held on 22nd February 2008.

Decisions are expected on all fellowships by 6th March 2008.
