PAPER: Rural Development and Administration

For Regular Students, lectures to be delivered: 9 Periods per week, 6 periods' theory and 3 period's tutorials (45 minutes each)

INSTRUCTIONS TO THE PAPER-SETTER

For Regular and Distance Education Students, the question paper will consist of three sections: A, B and C. Sections. A and B will have four questions each. Each question shall carry 12 marks. Section C will consist of 09 short answer type questions which will cover the entire syllabus uniformly and will carry 27 marks in all. Each short answer type question will carry 3 marks. The candidates are required to give answer of each short type question in about 100 words.

For Private Students, the question paper will consist of three sections: A, B and C. Sections. A and B will have four questions each. Each question shall carry 16 marks. Section C will consist of 09 short answer type questions which will cover the entire syllabus uniformly and will carry 36 marks in all. Each short answer type question will carry 4 marks. The candidates are required to give answer of each short type question in about 100 words.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CANDIDATES

Candidates are required to attempt five questions in all selecting two questions from each of the Section A and B and the entire section C.

Section-A

Introductory

a)Agronomy: Definition and scope; Classification of crops.

b)Diversification of Agriculture: crops vs. crops, crop vs. horticulture, crop vs. social forestry, horticulture vs. social forestry.

Rabi Crops

Scientific production of Rabi crops (like wheat, gram, raya, barseem, vegetables): Variables, seedbed preparation, seed rate, method of sowing, weed control, irrigation, and fertilizer requirement.

Sections-B

Kharif Crops

Scientific production of Kharif crops (like rice, cotton, sugarcane, groundnut, maize, and summer vegetables): Variables, seedbed preparation, seed rate, method of sowing, weed control, irrigation, and fertilizer requirement.

Agro-Chemical and Water Management

a)Agro-Chemicals: Concept, abuse, organic farming, green house cultivation.

b)Role of Irrigation in Crop Production: Water requirements and water management at micro and macro level, Depleting ground water table.

Dairying

a)Economic importance of dairy farming and its contribution to national economy.

b)Characteristics of imported buffalo and cattle breeds including freed and breeding methods; Artificial insemination, its advantages and disadvantages.

c)Management of pregnant animals, new born calves, bulls and bullocks.

d)Cattle sheds and space requirements.

e)Digestive system of ruminants and feeding f animals.

f)Signs of health and general preventive measures of diseases.

Poultry

a)Economic importance of poultry industry in India and Punjab

b)Different poultry breed and breeding methods; and Incubation and hatchery management.

c)Breeding and rearing of chicks; house and equipment of chicks; and Feeding of chicken.

d)Economics of poultry farming; Marketing of eggs and poultry.

e)Important poultry diseases and their control.

Sections-B

Piggery

a)Importance of piggery and important breeds of pigs.

b)Different types of houses for pigs.

c)Feeding of pigs.

d)Piggery age, signs of heat, synchronisation and management.

e)Management of fowls during pregnancy and at farrowing times.

f)Transportation and marketing of pigs.

g)Important diseases and their control.

Other Livestock

a)Scope of fish industry in Punjab and India; Species of fish for culturing and culture techniques; Fish pond management; Role of aquatic organizations in fish culture; and conservation of fish resources.

b)Scope of bee-keeping; Equipment for bee-keeping; Species of honey bees and its morphology; Honey bee products and their values; Enemies of honey bees; Diseases of honey bees; and Economics of honey bee keeping.
