Locum Specialty Doctor in Trauma & Orthopaedics

Full time / Part-time (will be considered)

Fixed Term until 31 January 2019

£887.80 per week as per PCS(DD)2017/1

NHS Forth Valley welcomes applications for two Locum Specialty Doctors in Trauma & Orthopaedics to join our department with immediate effect. These posts will be offered on a full or part time basis. The appointments will be subject to the terms and conditions of service for Specialty Doctors. Candidates should have Membership of a UK College of Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeons and a least 2 years’ experience in Trauma & Orthopaedics.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individuals who are prepared to contribute to the development of Orthopaedic and Musculoskeletal trauma services in NHS Forth Valley. The posts will include involvement in planned orthopaedic surgery as well as the on call trauma service. This will require a contribution out with the normal working day as well as weekends. The successful candidates may also be required to work on a full shift system.

It is expected and will be encouraged that the successful post holders will develop a sub-specialty interest that will complement the present Consultants in the department.

NHS Forth Valley is the largest employer in the area, with approximately 8000 staff from a wide range of professional and support occupations. Currently, services are provided in one acute hospital, four community hospitals and fifty-six health centres. Acute Services are based in purpose built 860 bedded Forth Valley Royal Hospital, which opened in 2011 and provides inpatient and outpatient services for a population of approximately 310,000.

THE FORTH VALLEY AREA

The work of the department includes the provision of a service dedicated to the diagnosis and management of diseases and conditions of the musculoskeletal system. The successful candidate will be afforded every opportunity to contribute to the development of a service in a setting appropriate to the 21st Century. The department has established relationships with Anaesthesia, Ageing & Health and Rheumatology. Dedicated operating lists with anaesthetists are in place.

Non Medical Staff

The service is supported clinically by a team of Orthopaedic Advanced Nurse Practitioners, ESP Physiotherapists and Outpatient Fracture Clinic nursing staff and non-clinically by medical secretarial support and a dedicated Orthopaedic Service Manager. We have just recruited a Fracture Liaison Practitioner and are looking to recruit an Ortho-Geriatric Nurse Practitioner.

Equipment

The Forth Valley Royal Hospital is fully digital, and the Trauma & Orthopaedic department is well equipped.

Background to the Post

The successful applicants will be part of a team consisting of 10 Consultants and one Associate Specialist and one Specialty Doctor. Supporting staff include variable numbers of trainees at different stages in their training. Trainees rotate from the West of Scotland Post-Graduate Training Scheme in Orthopaedics. Our experienced nursing staff make a substantial contribution to the work of the department. Extended scope practitioners in physiotherapy are in place.

Training and Education

NHS Forth Valley places a high priority on training and development across all staff groups and strongly supports the continuing medical education programme for Consultants. There is a purpose built education centre with a library, lecture theatre and meeting rooms with PACS and video-conferencing facilities and offers opportunities for a wide range of development activities for all staff groups. This is a modern, high quality facility which is widely used by groups throughout the country.

A wide range of full-text and e-journals are freely available. Internet access is available in both centres, and also in consultant workspace accommodation.

There are regular postgraduate meetings in both hospitals. Glasgow and Edinburgh with their Royal Colleges, university medical schools and postgraduate facilities are within easy reach.

Forth Valley Royal is the site of the Scottish Centre for Simulation and Clinical Human Factors.

Teaching, Research and Audit

The post holder will be expected, within his/her NHS responsibilities, to undertake audit, and to partake in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as required. They will also be expected to share in teaching programmes for medical students, junior doctors and middle-grade medical staff in Forth Valley. There is a well developed programme of weekly Clinical Meetings, monthly hospital wide Clinical Forums and other Educational events. The successful applicant will be expected to take an active part in the teaching of medical students who are attached to the department.

LOCUM SPECIALTY DOCTOR IN TRAUMA & ORTHOPAEDICS RESPONSIBILITIES

You will be responsible to the Orthopaedic Clinical Lead who will delegate a mentor in your career development.

You will participate in full time middle grade shift rota to support the on-call Consultants in the management of unplanned and emergency care and will include the provision of prospective cover of leave.

You will be a member of one of the trauma and orthopaedic teams, support both elective and emergency care, support consultants in theatre and out-patient programmed activities. You will be encouraged to develop and provide independent trauma and orthopaedic service in outpatients, day surgery or an orthopaedic sub-specialty of your interest.

There will be time for Continued Professional Development/Personal Study/Audit (one programmed activity a week).

It is important to note, that the current practice is for a variable timetable in order to maintain skills and cover. You will have to be flexible in your timetable.

The requirements of this post will change through time in line with clinical advances and developments in services provided by the NHS in Forth Valley.

Criteria for the Post

·  Membership of a UK College of Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeons

·  Minimum of 4 year’s post-registration experience with 2 years experience in trauma and orthopaedics

·  Full General Medical Council Registration

·  Appropriate practical skills

·  Excellent communication skills, both written and oral

·  Ability to work well within a team

·  Demonstrable organisation and time management skills

·  A genuine interest in the specialty

CONTRACTUAL DETAILS

Contracted activities for this appointment will be defined and agreed with the post holder and the Lead Consultant, Associate Medical Director and General Manager of the Surgical Directorate.

The post holders will be professionally responsible to the Associate Medical Director Surgical Directorate and managerially responsible to the General Manager, Surgical Directorate.

These posts will be based in Forth Valley Royal Hospital.

These posts are available on a full-time basis but the Board welcomes applications from individuals who are unable to undertake a full time commitment and who may wish to work on either a part-time or job share basis.

The terms and conditions of service applicable to this appointment are the Specialty Doctor Terms and Conditions of Service (Scotland) 2008 as amended from time to time.

NHS Forth Valley will require the postholders to agree with the General Manager and Associate Medical Director, a job plan of fixed and other commitments, which will be reviewed on an annual basis and revised as necessary to meet the requirements of the local and national service issues.

Specialty Doctors will be required to participate in an annual appraisal.

Formal appointment to these posts will be conditional upon satisfactory completion of all pre-employment checks, including satisfactory medical screening.
