2008 NJTL of the Year Award

Purpose:

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) continues its tradition of honoring outstanding program work in tennis and youth development by presenting the annual NJTL of the Year Award to programs and chapters that demonstrate extraordinary community leadership and excellence in youth tennis and education programming.

Qualifications:

All NJTL chapters and programs submitting applications for NJTL of the Year must have:

·  conducted a NJTL program for a minimum of three consecutive years prior to applying

·  a current registration status

·  USTA organization membership

·  Not won the National level award within the past two years (since 2006); otherwise your organization will be declared ineligible

You will be evaluated on the following criteria:

·  Scope of on-court program: number of instructors, sites, number of youngsters participating, dosage of programming (# hours/week and # weeks/year)

·  How closely multicultural participation matches or exceeds the local demographics

·  Number and availability of scholarships provided to participants

·  Chapter’s demonstration of financial self-sufficiency

·  Involvement with other recreational organizations such as the YMCA, YWCA, Boys and Girls Clubs, PALs, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts

·  Interaction with local parks and recreation department and schools

·  Support of USTA/NJTL program offerings (QuickStart Tennis, Arthur Ashe Essay Contest, Tennis Leadership Camp, Regional Rallies, etc)

Award:

Three (3) awards will be offered corresponding to your overall organization budget level. You must indicate which Level you fall into by completing the “Budget Reporting” section:

·  Level 1: budget up to $50,000

·  Level 2-3: budget between $50,000-$500,000

·  Level 4-5: budget $500,000 and higher

Awards will be honored on a National and Sectional level.

The three (3) National NJTL of the Year recipients will receive:

-  One paid trip (transportation, lodging, meals) to the 2009 Community Tennis Development Workshop (CTDW), in Hilton Head, SC February 13-15

-  One complimentary registration to the 2009 CTDW

-  An award of recognition from the USTA, presented during the Awards Ceremony at the CTDW

-  A video compilation of your program’s accomplishments to be presented at the CTDW

The three (3) per Section NJTL of the Year recipients (where applicable) will receive:

-  A plaque given from your local Section leadership for formal presentation

-  Other recognition arranged by Section leadership

Process and Deadlines:

Applications are due to your USTA/NJTL Section Representative no later than 5:00 PM ET, Friday, October 17, 2008 (contact info attached). Sections will rank applications and forward to the National office for final approval. In order to be considered for the National award, your section must recommend you as the Section NJTL of the Year.

II. Budget Reporting

When reporting budgets, some NJTL chapters might also be Community Tennis Associations, YMCAs or other, whose programming scope and corresponding budget is wider than that of NJTL. For example, a CTA operating adult league programs, would report their NJTL budget as just their youth programming expenses plus an administrative percentage of 10-20%, while their entire organization budget would include adult and youth expenses, plus all other expenses.

The total expenses of an organization including salaries, benefits, all programming (adult/youth), operating and overhead costs.

III. Scope of Program

a) In 1-page or less, describe the NJTL’s on-court program, including number of instructors, sites, the total number of youth participants, the multicultural backgrounds of participants, and the number of scholarships given to youngsters in need.

b) In 1-page or less, describe the off-court educational and life skills programming available at the NJTL.

IV. Community Involvement

a) In ½ page or less, describe the NJTL’s involvement with the local USTA section/district, schools, parks, and with other recreation organizations such as the YMCA, Boys & Girls Clubs, Boy/Girl Scouts, etc.

V. Statement of Purpose

a) In ½ page or less, list specific reasons why the NJTL deserves to win the NJTL of the Year Award.
