Assigning Team Roles – Activity Guide

A logical four-step process can help you assign team members to appropriate roles. Each step of the process builds on the last. You begin by identifying the tasks to be performed. Next, you identify the skills required to complete those tasks and then identify the skills, credentials, and character of your team members. Based on the information you gather during the first three steps, you can then assign team members to appropriate roles.

You can use this activity to apply the steps for assigning team members to appropriate roles in the context of a team you'll be leading.

Assigning Team Roles

You can use the following four steps to assign roles to your team members:

Identify tasks

You begin in step one by identifying the tasks your team will have to perform. This requires you to understand the full range of activities the team needs to perform to fulfill its mandate.

Identify required skills

In the second step, you identify the skills required to perform the tasks identified in step one. Take the time to ensure you understand the nature of the work, skills, and knowledge required to perform the tasks. You'll need to know this before you can match the right team member to the right role.

Identify team member skills

In step three, you identify team member skills. This involves some detective work as you identify the unique blend of skills, credentials, and character attributes that make up the capabilities of each team member. You need to be aware of what each member has to offer so you can make the best use of their capabilities when assigning team roles in step four.

Assign roles

In step four, you assign roles. Everything you learned during the first three steps will help you assign the appropriate team members to appropriate roles.
