Instructions

Please read the IMJR guidelines on “Preparing an Application,” then follow the instructions below. We also highly recommend that you meet with an IMJR academic advisor at least once as you prepare your proposal. We are happy to provide feedback on the preliminary drafts of your statement of purpose and plan of study.

  1. Fill in the information in the top boxes of the form, including your major title, addresses, telephone numbers, other major or additional degree, number of credits, current GPA, etc.
  2. Draft a plan of study meeting all of the major requirements as listed in the IMJR Guidelines for Preparing an Application. Please also read the catalog requirements on the reverse side of this page.
  3. Complete Part A and Part B of your plan of study on the form, filling in the courses that comprise your major.
  • In the Type column put “W” for the writing intensive course, “RM” for the research methods course(s), “E” for experiential learning (internship, study abroad, or independent study/research), or “H” if it will count towards your honors requirement (if applicable).
  • In the Dept. Course# column put the name of the course: ARE 3150, for example.
  • In the Title column put the title of the course: Applied Resource Economics, for example.
  • In the Cr. column put the number of credits for the course.
  • In the Prerequisites column indicate if you met the prerequisites for the course (“yes” or if not, list the prerequisite courses you will still need to take).
  • In the Semester taken or planned column list the semester in which you took the course or are planning to take the course: Spring 2016, for example. This is a planning tool. We know the precise semester may change.
  1. Draft a statement of purpose according to the IMJR guidelines for Preparing an Application.
  2. Identify and meet with three faculty advisors to discuss your ideas for the major and to review your plan of study and statement of purpose.
  3. Revise your plan of study and statement of purpose according to your faculty advisors’ recommendations.
  4. Obtain the signatures of your faculty advisors in the appropriate boxes on the plan of study form.
  5. Sign the form and submit it, along with your statement of purpose, unofficial transcript and, if applicable, your double major worksheet and double major declaration form,to the main Enrichment Programs check-in office (Rowe 421) before 4:00pm on the deadline date.

Catalog Requirements

Below are the requirements for the individualized major as listed in the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources section of the Undergraduate Catalog.

Credit Requirements

The Individualized Major program allows students to create a major that is not otherwise offered at the University of Connecticut. Students pursuing an Individualized Major must meet all university-level and college-level requirements for graduation and complete at least 36 credits numbered 2000 or above.

Requirements for the Major

Requirements for declaring and completing an Individualized Major are listed below:

  • Students must be in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 2.5 to declare an Individualized Major.
  • Students must submit a proposed statement of purpose and identify three faculty members who are willing to serve as an advisory committee.
  • An Individualized Major has a minimum of 36 credits numbered 2000 or above courses which must: be from two or more departments; include at least 18 credits from departments in the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources; be approved by the student’s advisory committee; be taken at the University of Connecticut; have a combined Grade Point Average of at least 2.5; include no more than 6 credits of Independent Study and Internship; not to be taken on Pass/Fail; meet all requirements of the “36 Credit Group” of the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources

Computer Technology

To satisfy the general education requirement for the computer technology competency, Individualized Majors must meet the University’s entrance expectations. They will not have to meet any advanced requirement for computer technology.

Writing in the Major

The writing in the major and information literacy requirements will be satisfied by meeting these requirements for any of the majors within the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources.
