COURSE DESCRIPTION:

A study in health for individuals and the community as to identification of various diseases, means of transmission, and prevention. Lecture 3 hours. No Laboratory.

Understanding Your Health, Ninth EditionAuthors: Payne, Hahn and Lucas

** We will use the textbook at all class meetings. Please bring your book to every class so you may participate in class assignments and discussion (and earn all your participation points!) **

Course Objectives:

  1. To develop a knowledge of various health issues
  2. To be able to recognize and acknowledge our own health needs and to be able to make healthy lifestyle choices that will act as preventive medicine.
  3. To be able to help others govern their own health

Teaching Methods:

Lecture, class discussion, assigned reading material, outside assignments, videos and handouts.

Attendance:

Attendance is essential for successful completion of the course. Attendance will be taken during each class period. Attendance will be considered in final grading. In the case of an unavoidable absence, it is the student’s responsibility to obtain assignments and/or lecture notes missed by the absence of the class. Instructor will not lecture material again to any student who missed class.

late assignments AND MAKE-up work:

Make up exams are left to the instructors discretion. If a makeup exam should be approved, it will be a different version of the original exam and will take place in the testing center (595-7534) within normal hours of operation.

Acceptance of late assignments or missed in-class work is left to the discretion of the instructor and may be subject to a reduction in total possible points earned.

COURSE WITHDRAWAL:

The deadline to withdraw from a course shall not exceed 3/4 the duration of any class. Contact the Counseling Office at any TCC campus to initiate withdrawal from a course ('W' grade) or to change from Credit to Audit. Check the TCC Academic Calendar for deadlines. Students who stop participating in the course and fail to withdraw may receive a course grade of “F,” which may have financial aid consequences for the student.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Academic dishonesty (cheating) is defined as the deception of others about one’s own work or about the work of another. Academic dishonesty or misconduct is not condoned or tolerated at campuses within the TulsaCommunity College system. TulsaCommunity College adopts a policy delegating certain forms of authority for disciplinary action to the faculty. Such disciplinary actions delegated to the faculty include, but are not limited to, the dismissal of disrespectful or disorderly students from classes. In the case of academic dishonesty a faculty member may:

  • Require the student to redo an assignment or test, or require the student to complete a substitute assignment or test;
  • Record a "zero" for the assignment or test in question;
  • Recommend to the student that the student withdraw from the class, or administratively withdraw the student from the class;
  • Record a grade of "F" for the student at the end of the semester. Faculty may request that disciplinary action be taken against a student at the administrative level by submitting such a request to the Dean of Student Services.
